My one has malfunctioned today. It stops at the first draining cycle and says "Error 62". Google tells me that this is something to do with the drainage pump underneath.

I pulled the pump out and there was a bit of crud/lint in the little impeller. I cleaned that out as best I could and put the pump back in.

I ran the machine again and it stopped at the same point with Error 62 again.

Anyone got any bright ideas that I could try before I have to phone a service tech?

How far did it get draining? (Didn't drain at all, drained a bit, drained completely)
Did you hear the pump start?
How did you access the pump to clean it?

Edit: And what model?

It won't drain at all. It gets to the first spin cycle and dies with that error code.

I didn't hear the pump start at all.

I advanced through the rest of the cycles to the final spin, pressed start again and nothing happens.

I tipped the machine on its side to get at the pump. It came out very easily, no tools required.

I haven't done this before, so I don't know if the amount of crud in there was a little or a lot. I removed all that I could however. The motor shaft spins freely, so no issue there.

It's a 2002 F&P Intuitive. So it's about 13 years old now.

Hope all this helps.

Sounds like the pump or the controller. If it was an obstruction you'd hear the pump try.

Looks like it's a tech visit for you. I'd start by asking them what the cost is for the possible faults (they should have a pretty good idea) so you can decide if the visit is worth it or not.

F&P aggressively protect/prosecute against publication of their service manuals (copyright) on the net, including lists of service code errors.  Not nice IMO, but they charge a fee which "authorised" service folks pay, and in return the service folk get some protection from competition, and referrals from F&P customer service. A nice tidy arrangement.
However, they can't stop people posting advice to DIYers based on their service manuals, nor can they stop non-authorised qualified service people working on their appliances.

Where to go from there if you're a competent DIYer - but can't get needed information to service something you thought you fully owned:

You could of course try to obtain an electronic copy of the service manual via torrents, pirate sites etc, but of course I won't recommend that, because it might not be legal.

There is an appliance repair forum at "UK Whitegoods" - sub-forum Australasian appliances
Search that forum - the question may have already been answered.  If not, you could create an account and ask.  That forum doesn't seem to be very active.

Closer to home is Trademe forums, "gardening and DIY".  Ask there - there's one person in particular there who is an appliance service-person doing F&P washers, who knows them inside out.  User name starts with p.

Good luck.  I have kept our F&P Smart Drive going since 1992.  The drum, outer case, motor rotor/stator, power cord, and drain pump are original - I think I've replaced just about everything else electronic - it's never been seen by by a service person.  F&P parts shut down my method of getting parts at trade price - curse them.  I used to put a pair of blue overalls on for trips to their parts counter, but they've got wise to that. There are other ways...

PM sent to OP. And for others, Error 62 is "Motor controller (main circuit board) has detected excessive pump current".

Give this guy a call, he's an F&P guru  http://www.a1washingmachinerepairs.co.nz/

We had a similar problem about three years ago, well the board and some solenoid went, then the pump in quick succession, he sold me a secondhand controller board & solenoid and a recon'd pump, came to about $250 in total.

I went to him to buy parts, he explained how to fit etc so got the job done cheap as chips and washing machine has not missed a beat since

He also does house calls and complete repairs etc

Cannot recommend him enough, absolute honest to the core guy

Thanks for your help everyone. I ended up getting a service guy in.

He diagnosed a fault in the control module. The pump itself is fine. The control module is no longer manufactured, so he's going to have to source a reconditioned one for me.
