Hi

I have just bought a house and is looking to buy some beds and lounge suite. I have budget constraint for sure but then i also don't want to go for the cheapest option, so something good value for money sort of thing. My friend bought a lounge suite from PK furniture and it collapsed in a month's time. Has anyone else also had issues with PK Furniture? What are some good stores out there in Wellington to go for browsing furniture? Went to HV but they are quite expensive compared to other stores?

There used to be a Big Save furniture out in Porirua, from memory it's behind the Briscoes in the Mega centre area.

Target used to be up by Bunnings, but now they are only on Thorndon quay.

The Farmers store on Cuba has some couches\beds as another option as well.

Other than those, and not Harvey's, then it's getting into the higher end stuff on Thorndon quay, BoConcept and Corso de fiori

PK's quality is questionable but prices are really good. If you are wanting something to last a few years, go with the likes of PK.

I would recommend Freedom for the balance of quality and price.

I bought some AEQ furniture (Penrose) in the past and they lasted about 3 years. Very good price but you might have to bargain a bit. There is iFurniture.co.nz as well with a showroom in Onehunga.

We also bought some furniture from Ideal Furniture in Onehunga, he is very reasonable and also does free delivery and fitting at home.

I picked up a couple of decent couches during one of the (many) Farmers sales at 50% off a couple of months ago. Decent quality and they keep stock in NZ so it wasn't a long wait (around a week). The problem I've found with places like Big Save is the quality isn't great and they don't keep a lot of the stock in NZ so you can be waiting quite a while to receive it.

Big Save might be your best bet. There's bound to be a sale because she has bought too much and Dad says it has to go!

Trade me. Plenty of good second hand stiff that is better quality than much of the imported furniture you can buy. Can also get it recovered.

Freedom is actually well priced and well made.

I can recommend Big Save in Porirua. For furniture we bought a corner chaise couch that broke after about 14 months. They are replacing it so I they stand by their product. We also have two trundler beds (for the kids) from them and they are built well.

I have no experience with PK furniture.

Sure, the construction of s/h furniture can be better than new stuff, but recovering furniture can be a really costly exercise, especially if you want it done properly/well. I had a armchair that belonged to my grandfather recovered about three years ago. The cost of doing so was a bit over a grand! ("Recovering", as in this case, often involves quite a bit more than just sticking new fabric on; even doing just that can be more expensive than buying new.)

In my experience, Big Save now offers a much wider range of furniture than it once did, when it did indeed focus on the bargain end of the market. Nowadays they offer NZ-made furniture as well, which is competitively priced compared to HN etc (but, as with HN, Farmers etc - only ever buy when on special, or ask for a similar level of discount). Some of their o/s-sourced lounge suites etc are not bad.

Farmers regularly has 50% off its furniture, so definitely another place to check out.

Edit: yep, Freedom furniture is pretty good, but I don't think it offers the same level of value it once did (not so much a comment on their own product, but more that there's now better choice/quality in the lower-mid end of the furniture market), and their sale discounts are generally not that substantial. I reckon if you're looking for value for money (which the OP indicated in the first post) then I think other places offer better deals.

I have no experience with PK. Most of my furniture was bought in Australia and shipped here, but a lot of it came from Freedom and the beds and dining suite are over 15 years old now and apart from the legs being a bit knocked about (where my wife can sometimes be a bit aggressive with the vacuum cleaner) they are as good as new. Bought some new leather couches in Farmers a while ago when they were 50% off but the leather is quite thin and seems poor quality - I'd probably look elsewhere in future.

I would keep an eye on Farmers, I bought a leather lounge suite for them with 50% off and I'm talking real leather not the bonded leather rubbish that falls apart.

Although if what you are recoving is good quality, you will end up with a better product that will last longer.

I would say there is still quite a bit of furniture on trademe that were purchased from the likes of freedom, that are just a few years old and being sold, which wouldn't require recovering. My brother has purchased a few sofas this way. Mainly from people moving overseas who needed a quick sale and didn't want to pay for storage.
It pays to shop around with recovering. I had a small sofa recovered for $400, supplying the fabric. The old furniture though is for life, whereas furniture you by from big box retailer tend to last 10 years or less. eg The leather can crack and peal etc. The better quality new furniture does tend to be a premium price. Plus so much of the new stuff is ugly. There isn't much in the BBR stores I would pay money for.
