We are moving in February, first time with kids in tow.

Does anyone know a good source for cardboard boxes? I'm in Wellington.

I know the storage places sell them but if anyone has better ideas please let me know. When I was younger I would just get them from the retailers recycling, is that still the best option besides paying for boxes you use once.

Banana boxes from supermarkets is one option. As a bonus you get the odd free banana!

find a Pak n save , they put all the empty boxes at the checkouts for customers to use.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I'll check it out but usually pak n save cut the boxes with box cutters don't they?

Pak n' sav etc.

Talk with butchery and deli kitchen departments get them to save you Hellers boxes.

A couple of good reasons

1. come as flat pack (get heaps in the car!)
2. good handles
3. can be stacked up to 6 high!
4. will take up to 30 Kg!

I know it won't help you now; but for future reference for other people; The Warehouse usually has piles of large, fairly strong, fire resistant boxes in the first few days of November... (The shipping boxes for the various box sets; I don't mean the actual firework boxes)

The last time we've moved, we've known it was going to happen in advance long enough to get a stash of these put aside in our garage...

What may be more useful for the OP is http://www.rentacrate.co.nz/ - we also used their rental plastic crates for our last move. They've great; strong, easily stacked, and the movers seem to really like them, too. Best bonus is because they come to collect them again shortly after your move, you're motivated to unpack! [Some people may not see this as a bonus, so YMMV].

Thanks for the tips everyone. I've also found boxes selling on trademe for about $2 a box which isn't bad.

BTW warehouse stationerys largest box seems to be the archive style box which is about $5-$8 a box

Have always used free banana boxes from supermarkets. They are usually keen to get rid of them.

That's strange about WS, we purchased a bunch from there last year (Lower Hutt store) they had a full range of cardboard boxes from small to quite large, we were packing a whole bunch of stuff for storage.

This is what we have done in the past, and usually every few weeks WS run some form of special so can usually get them for half price or so. From my experience, using brand new uniform sized boxes jsut makes everything easier, they stack nice, have plenty of blank space to write on them etc.

Most shops sell chinese sourced goods which usually come in cartons made from heavily recycled board which is really only suitable for single use, more hassle then they are worth most of the time, I think last time we moved I spend maybe $60~80 for about 30 boxes, a few rolls of tape, a couple of rolls of fragile tape, roll of bubblewrap and roll of corrugated cardboard

Thanks Wade. I'll keep an eye out for a sale at WS. I was at mitre 10 earlier and happened to walk past a selection of new moving boxes. They have various sizes up to 500x500x500. Prices were reasonable too - I think the largest was $6.

Cheers Wade. Those look great. I think the issue was I was looking for box and should've been looking for carton lol.

Moore wilsons have a big stock of boxes near their till, but probably for customers. Bunnings too has a big stack of customer boxes.
