I want a boring, overlapping 1.8m paling fence erected at our old place we are selling. Quoted $92 per linear metre, incl. GST.

Is that an ok price?

When next door sold we went halves, his cousin did it, his second fence as I found out later, looks ok, but not a great job if you check it. That was $2400 for 46 metres. The quote I got is a qualified builder. ChCh if that matters

I got several quotes for a 30m fence (1.2m high plus a gate).  Best was $4500, reusing main posts and half depth trellis around the top which saved a lot of money.  He did an exceptional job.  I had other quotes of around $6000 for a much plainer fence which I thought was a bit steep.

My thought is that $92 is a good price if a proper skilled fencer is going to do it.  Have a look on Trade me - they sometimes give the sqm price.

$92 is pretty good, estimates I've seen in Auckland are $150-200/metre. Mind you since it's for an Auckland $10 million plywood bach with a $2 million carport, I guess the fence can cost a bit more.

Rule of thumb in Chch with 1.8m paling fences is $100 per metre + GST so $92 seems pretty darned good.

There are some really horrid jobs done by cheap fence and deck installers. Make sure you check out the work they have done.

A guy up the road had one done and its full of ugly knotty wood and isnt even propery straight, its not been painted or anything so like most cheap timber fences will look like absolute trash in a few years time.

$92/lm seems very cheap

I'd be asking what thickness and quality of materials are being used.

The last thing you want is something that will warp in the sun.

This quote is via our painter, quailified builder, and wife knows painters wife, so im happy with that.

But I know what you mean. The other fence that was done when next door sold was done by an amateur handyman, his second fence. It looks fine, but there are some gaps on the overlap, nails not even.

Price looks good, so thanks for the advice

I showed painter the other day, what we have on one boundary. I feel there is a discount in here as we gave the painter a lot of work last year, and doing a bit starting today.

I'm confused - do you have a painter quoting to build you a fence?

(or has auto-correct struck again)

$50 per meter for materials by my calc, seems like you've got a good price unless you want to go to a handyman type rather then actual builder

Lol, what do you mean again, no dont answer that

Painter is doing painting work, he did a lot at another place we had last year, wife knows his Mum (I said wife before), he knows builders, so he got one to check it out for me, and give a quote. I feel there is a discount in here, but builder is qualified.

And the material they're using. You'd want something like a 2.4m 100x100mm (or close to it) H4 post and H3.2 timber for the fencing, concreted into the ground, etc. You can always cut corners by using less treated timber (or untreated, and hope the paint holds up the rot for awhile), digging in the post, etc. Took down a 30+ year old fence between the neighbour's place and mine after some plonker backed a car into it and it could have stood for another 30 years apart from the automotive damage.

The fencing on the other side of the property, on the other hand... probably about 10-15 years old, and I think it's the weeds that are holding it up.

Our neighbours have just put up a new fence and it is terrible. The paling go all the way down to the ground, so they absorb water, and eventually they will rot. They should have had a gap between the ground and paling.  Also the pailings are quite wide, so more prone to warping, but cheaper fences do have wider palings as there is less labour involved.  The best fences have a concrete nib wall at the bottom to prevent weeds growing up.  A poorly build detailed fence will not last as long as a well design and built fence. But it depends on how long you need it to last.  So you get what you pay for. Certainly go and see previous work the person has done. You can cut so many corners building a fence.
