Hi folks... currently working on a kids' project to create a ball bearing racing car and I need some help to get the end of the wooden axle (40cm x 4cm x 3cm) round so we can put the ball bearings at the ends. Does anyone know who could this for me in Wellington?

I would get a double ended bolt with timber screw one end and machine thread the other. Still won't be super strong. I would laminate the timber over a full length threaded rod ideally.

Is there any particular reason you are not using a steel axle?

 

When turning at speed,  the forces will be significant, and you may end up snapping the end off a wooden axle?

 I'd expect that if you turned down the end on a lathe to a spindle, all the strength would go. As above, best solution may be a full width steel rod that has a wheel on each end, and attached to the underside of the current wooden axle.

It's a toy, and the passenger is not heavy. The reason for doing it with wood is because it's something that should be easy to assemble. Speeds won't be too much (as in not like a skateboard).

Got some ball bearings for free (dumpster diving in a shop - the owner told us not worth buying new ones but he had plenty we could have for free). Got some wood and father-in-law helped with the cutting. Here's almost done (a few things to do)
