Hi All,

Was shooting out today and noticed that the footpath was wet, also very soggy about 1 - 1.5m from the water meter.

I know we have black plastic pipe, I dont know how old it is, our house was built in 1966 so might be original.

After a bit of digging I came accross what appears to be the old toby.

It was well covered with soil, about 1m inside the boundry and full of dirt.

Lifting the lid off it there are two taps ( only 1 handle ) one for us and one for next door ( we are a duplex )

My gut feeling is that it would be more cost effective / reliable to dig a new trench ( approx 12.5m ) and get new pipes installed.

Would we need to get a new toby installed or will using the water meter tap be sufficient.

The water meter outlet is the demarcation point between Watercare owned pipes and pipes that you own. Sometimes in the older parts of Auckland the original shutoff valve is still there. Sounds like you have found that valve. Just get a new pipe run direct from the meter outlet to your house. As there will probably be lots of joins between the meter and that old valve.

Black pipe from the 1960s will be alkathene.

That is what I suspected.

I better start trenching.

Is there a minimum depth for water?

Can I put a comunications conduit in the same trench in preperation for UFB?

Not sure if Chorus will run their fibre in your conduit. In Chch we need to get a new water pipe put down and asked Enable - who basically said no. Since then we have found out that they might supply their conduit free of charge and allow us to put it in the trench we dig. AFAIK there's no reason why the fibre and water can't be in the same trench. I won't have an answer for a few weeks. One of the neighbors involved is a project manager with direct contact with Enable. It seems dumb not to put the fibre conduit down at the same time, but the initial response seemed to be no - that they don't care as they get paid to do the trenching anyway. So if that's not possible then it's on to plan B - get Enable to dig the trench at their cost, then put the water pipe in their trench. There's also buried power cables in the same area. Will get cables located before digging if we do it.
