Mercury said they would install a smart meter but the installer said it couldn't be done due to the proximity of the board to our gas meter. Does this mean I can't get a smart meter ever?

Yes.
Aredwood:
And what about those smart meters that were installed on boards with really old wiring? And which was often only 6mm2 cables as well. And probably with a 63A slow blow pole fuse as well. Surely they should have been refused unless they got upgraded.
I know someone who got one installed that they didnt really want and because of the age of the panel they had to drill it apparantly ended up taped off like a crime scene and the people dressed similarly to attach the new meter to their board. If they will go to that effort because of asbestos or whatever then they can damn well handle a gas meter!
We wanted to install our infinity above the gas main, but couldn't due to proximity of the gas meter (its not the actual meter that's the issue its the vent in an emergency event). My plumber said to ring my gas supplier (Nova) and request a different type of meter (I forget what it was called). It has a different type of vent on it and the clearances are less. The lines company came out and did that (no charge - although I was expecting one) and the plumber could now install the infinity where we planned.
I'll have a look at the meter tomorrow and see if i can remember what i had to request.
