Mercury said they would install a smart meter but the installer said it couldn't be done due to the proximity of the board to our gas meter. Does this mean I can't get a smart meter ever?

What was their logic? If a smart meter would be unsafe, then surely your current meter would also be unsafe. Ask them what would happen if your current meter stopped recording your power usage, meaning a new meter would be needed no matter what.

Guessing that you have your gas meter directly underneath your meterboard. There were lots of houses built like this, and they would have been certified as being safe at the time. The rules for the location of those gas meters was set by gas supplier. And in a lot of areas the same company provides both gas and electricity lines service's. So it should still comply today on the basis that it complied with the rules in force at the time.

And what about those smart meters that were installed on boards with really old wiring? And which was often only 6mm2 cables as well. And probably with a 63A slow blow pole fuse as well. Surely they should have been refused unless they got upgraded.

Guess you could sell the house to a tinfoil hat brigade member with that as a feature then. No smart meter ever. Save yourself from the rays.

I know someone who got one installed that they didnt really want and because of the age of the panel they had to drill it apparantly ended up taped off like a crime scene and the people dressed similarly to attach the new meter to their board. If they will go to that effort because of asbestos or whatever then they can damn well handle a gas meter!

We wanted to install our infinity above the gas main, but couldn't due to proximity of the gas meter (its not the actual meter that's the issue its the vent in an emergency event).  My plumber said to ring my gas supplier (Nova) and request a different type of meter (I forget what it was called).  It has a different type of vent on it and the clearances are less.  The lines company came out and did that (no charge - although I was expecting one) and the plumber could now install the infinity where we planned.

I'll have a look at the meter tomorrow and see if i can remember what i had to request.
