Hi,

is there any way to transfer part of the discount accumulated on a card to another card?

here is the longer story: I have joined Contact Energy on a Fuel rewards Plan which promised a free tank of fuel (as a joining bonus) and then 30c/L discount once a month, every month. The free tank of fuel is offered as a discount of $2.50/L applied to your Smartfuel card.

What they actually in the first month, is to apply both these discounts, which sums up to a total discount of $2.80/L for something which costs much less. Once you fuel up, the accumulated discount is reduced to zero. So basically the great deal from Contact ends up in buying petrol for $2.80/L !?

The way I look at it, petrol being (say) $2.10 that means my discount is 70c/L more than full price, when filling up 50L I loose $35, which it was promised to me under what I now see as being false advertising. Thi sis why I am thinking if there is any way to split the accumulated discount between two separate cards, and then you can use the full discount without loosing anything?

Thank you.

And then you get a full tank without spending any cent, right?

That's the free tank for joining up, surely?

The way I see it, I still loose the 30c/L for that month, which is added to my card but I cannot use it (it gets lost when you get the free tank of fuel)...

So you are wanting the 30c/l on the next fill for the month? Seems reasonable that they can be seperate so I would be on their case about that.

How expensive is the power to cover these crazy incentives tho?

I think the first month is free, and you get the discount from the next month.

You forget petrol in Auckland can be up to 50c less than other parts of the country. It's 30c cheaper in parts than Wellington.

The $2.80 discount ensures that people outside Auckland have the same deal.

Why is that their problem? They were promised 30c/l off once a month, and a free "tank" (which I assume is the usual smart fuel 50l limit anyway) - 2 seperate things. To add them together because some people pay more than $2.50/l for fuel is just silly.

Thats like saying you can have a free big mac and a free combo but the burger in your combo counts as your free one.

I will quote the OP: "Plan which promised a free tank of fuel (as a joining bonus) and then 30c/L discount once a month, every month."

I understand is a free tank on the first month, then the discount from the next month. That's what the OP got. Not sure what's going on with this discussion.

Oops typo there I meant they give you the $2.50 (which is up to 50c more than cheap petrol in Auckland) to cover the cost of fuel elsewhere in the country.

I just asked somebody I know who signed up for the deal and they got the $2.50 in the first month and then 30cpl each subsequent month so I'm not really sure why it's different for the OP.

I'd never use it anyway since Smartfuel is just a scam..

If you use Smartfuel correctly it can save you over 20c/L off the advertised price.

So as far as I know, it's currently the best petrol discount scheme in the country.

It's a rort. The retail price of fuel is inflated by 10cpl just so they can offer you 10cpl off.

The ACCC in Australia banned fuel voucher schemes years ago when they got to 40c because it was skewing the fuel market, but it seems NZers are slow to learn.

I go to Z because its the only thing nearby with 95, and they always seem to have the price go up just before the 10c flybuys discount deal. Still 22c cheaper when not discounting than the GAS station on mt eden road near work that I filled up at once because my light was on and couldnt believe how expensive it was.

Well, yes it is. But I'd rather take part in the rort than pay the extra 10c. So the people *not* using it, are subsidising my wife's petrol (I have a company car). Works for me.

Biggest saving we got was $1.24/l off. So $62 off the tank of gas. I'd rather have than in my (well, my wife's) pocket than in the petrol station's.

Except the % of people paying full price is now very minimal so they're not subsidising you - you're simply paying extra to get a discount. Without Smartfuel the price would permanently be 6cpl less than what it is now.

I spent almost $7000 on petrol last year and went through this exercise. It's simply cheaper to go to the stations with lowest pump price. IE Gull and the other self serve places rather than fuel cards that would give a discount, but those stations charged more than the discount.
