For anyone who has installed a security cam on a new build. Just wondering what the best way to handle the installation of a security camera by the front door of a new build. Should the electrician just leave a network cable left sticking out of the soffit by the door to connect it to, feeding back the main network board where all the other cables on the star network feed back to? As new cameras will usually be powered by POE, is it also recommended to have a drawstring to pull through a separate power cable at a later date if needed?

No need for power as anything that doesn't have POE will be terrible anyway. IMHO if you're ever running data cables anywhere running one is always a stupid idea though when cable is so cheap and all the costs are labour.

Thanks. How many is it best to run for a security camera and future upgradability? I guess the more the better with 4k.

4k h265 is still well under 100 megabit. gigabit should do anything you need in the near future and beyond that who knows. Perhaps when you are fitting 3d scanning xray face recognition sentry turrets to your house you will need more, but that is a bridge to cross in the future.

You may want multiple cameras in one location, like a fisheye to cover everything and something with a long lens facing a pedestrian gate etc, so more cables is better, another hundred for another box beats having to buy a POE splitter hub thing later on and hoping you have enough power for both.

Thanks. Ones on my reasons for wanting to a send a power cable though, (eg have an empty conduit) was if there was ever one of these security systems invented by Google etc (eg a better version of those Arlo systems), which do everything in the cloud. They tend to use wifi and batteries, but ideally I would want to hook it up to a power supply instead, so I don't have to worry about batterys. The thing is that technology is changing so quickly, that I want to make sure that it allows for potential changes in technology.

You can just put a POE converter on the end of the cat6 cable and use it only for DC anyway.

Thanks. Wasn't aware of a convertor, so that would solve that.
