I'm sick of my toilet that always needs repairs so I'm getting a new one. I want something that looks modern- maybe square- one piece and flushes and stays clean and never clogs. Are there any certain brands that are known for quality in New Zealand? (My first chose was a Reves Kohler but then I looked up reviews on it and it was horrible- good thing I didn't by it)

Whatever from wherever your plumber sends you shopping.  One such example, of which we're getting: https://www.plumbingworld.co.nz/shop-by-brand/levivi.htm?filter&aspect=Type+of+Seat%5eSoft+Close+Seat

What keeps going wrong? You can often replace complete inlet and flush valves with alternative parts.

May I recommend comfort be added to your list of requirements? Some of those 'modern' toilets are horrible to sit on. Nothing wrong with a cheap Caroma. We went with the cheapest because it had the best feel.

Caroma.

As they are Australian designed for Australian / NZ conditions. And they have excellent spare parts support.

Lots of no name brands are designed for Chinese conditions (toilet paper is put into a bin next to the toilet instead of being flushed). And such toilets struggle to flush large clumps of paper.

Check if you have 80mm or 100mm outlet pipe on your toilet. As 80mm block up easily. If so, ask your plumber about upgrading it to 100mm.

All new toilets are designed to hold less water in the bowl. So unfortunately "Skid Marks" are a problem in any new toilet.

In 2012 we got "Caroma Opal2000 Smartflush and Avalon soft close seat". It's worked very well since then. That model will probably be supersceeded, but the brand and Opal range seems to still be available.

For a few months after it was put in it made a bit of a noise like there was a bit of water going through it some of the time it wasn't meant to, but the plumber got a replacement inside bit (not sure what) to install. Before we installed it, it came right by itself.

This type of P to S trap converter does seem to have a narrowing to allow it to plug into normal waste pipe. It can give an occasional scare as the water rises in the bowl before getting everything moving.

>IMHO if you use that much paper that it is a problem there you're overdoing it. You'd better have to have a tree root free sewer to the main. That's before all the other unflushable stuff that ends up in the news ( Wgtn removes 10 tonnes of wet wipes etc per week from the screens in the treatment plant).

With that said, they've put some rectangular Caromas in at work and they're horrible to sit on. Stick with the traditional shape!

Chosen from the industrial "Time in Motion" range. Seems like the design is a success.

Its very old—normal things keep going like seals leaking— I do fix but I think the design of the button you push is badly designed so it sticks down and then keeps runnning and running so you have to wait until it pops back up before you leave- cause you might have to fiddle with it if the button sticks. And also its just an old cheap toilet 20+ years and I think it gets a lot of calcium stuck to it because the porcelain has been scrubbed off over the years.

Really? Because I like the look of the square ones- its a toilet but doesn't look like one. ... other people have also told me not to get one for the same reason. Wish I could try one out but I am really not willing to sit on a toilet in a store with people  looking at me.
