Hello,

We have been provided with a quotation of $7000 + GST for gas fitting for new build which is only going to be in 2 places. One pipe would be for hot water infinity system (Rinnai A26) and 2nd pipe would be for external gas fire place. I will find out next week whether this cost includes the Rinnai A26 which retails for around $1400 but even if it did include that cost, does $5500 + GST sounds reasonable for description above plus providing gas certificate for a new build?

Thanks

My own limited experience has been that gas fitters are expensive.
We got charged 1700 to remove one heater and fit another in its stead.
There might have been cost of a flue in there and a small amount of other work but for the time spent it seemed like a hell of a lot.

Get more quotes, ask for the hourly rate and get a breakdown of costs.

Do you mean externally flued fire place or are you putting a gas fire place outside? It may be cheaper to use an outdoors rated electric radiant heater outside once installation is factored in.

Gas fireplace outside for covered alfresco. The section size is 684sqm and mains gas is available on the street so it will not be a long drag of pipes from Main Street to setup the 2 gas connections which both happen to be for external wall connections as well.

I found out today via the builder that $7100 + GST for gasfitter quote does not includes the gas califont. It does however included connection for califont, external gas fireplace, bbq and gas hob. Without gas hob and bbq connection, it will cost $5500 + GST

You should ask for a cost breakdown estimate.

But while you are at it make sure whoever you eventually end up with can actually do the job and they are accredited as things can go very bad if not done correctly.

That is a good point. The other thing is make sure they have a good reputation and are experienced. That goes for all tradies you use on the house build. I would recommend not using anyone who has limited experience.

Update - I got the gas fitter to price his quote down from $5500 + GST to $2900 + GST for same scope of work as earlier. I asked a bunch of other people about the initial quote and everyone advised that is an over the top quote and passed that feedback to the gas fitter which helped.

Were you getting his price to start with or was there some "middleman" markup going on?

$5500 + GST was the price given to start with.
