Hi there, this seems to be the place for good geek advice regarding off grid in NZ....

Located in North Wellington area, I'm about to finally start building on a bush covered block. The plan is to never go on the grid for a number of reasons (expense of connecting, environmental & independence from grid problems when the inevitable large earthquake happens)

Looking forward to kicking off a thread about design and set up of the property in the correct sub forum, cheers.

Looking forward to kicking off a thread about design and set up of the property with input from anyone willing to share their experiences.

Main points:

1. Property is 5ha of hilly bush, with a clearing on a North facing hill for 3 b/r house, shed and driveway.

2. Build will be in 2 phases: 1. Large shed 19.2mx9m to be built Q4 2019. 2 The house build will be 2021/2022.

3. The property will be totally off grid. No tie back to grid, so I'll need batteries.

4. Shed is gable design with 30 deg near to north facing roof, so idea for Solar PV and Water panel installation.

5. Shed will have some machinery such as woodworking and metalworking gear including a welder. I'd prefer to look into a 3 phase option for powering the machines as good used commercial gear is 3 phase and often cheaper than single phase.

6. Site is "high" wind category, and has good regular breeze without getting too crazy like other parts of Wellington.

Very keen to connect with anyone fully off the grid in Porirua/Pauatahanui/Haywards area to discuss your local setup. Cheers
