Have had these weeds growing in the vege garden for the past couple of years, I spayed roundup several times over winter but they have come back again this summer.

can anyone identify this and recommend a way to get rid of them for good

Great bindweed, part of the convolvulus family. We have those too, as does huge swathes of the country. They're very tenacious. I've sprayed a fair bit over the years and pulled lots and lots of root systems out but they keep coming back, although nowhere near as bad as they used to be. A big part of the problem is they have such massive rhizome root systems the poison you're using (glyphosate) doesn't reach the whole system so it'll just keep growing back. Dicamba is what you need need for more effective treatment.

My big gun is Amatrole.

This kills bamboo and that is bloody hard, roundup does not touch it.

Spray on new growth is best.

Be careful, Amatrole is nasty, if you accidentally spray something by mistake you need to wash it with lots of water immediately.

We have convolovus coming through from a neighbour. I spray any new shoots with a very strong roundup mix from a spray bottle. Nearly got it beaten?

Doesn't convolvulus have bulbs (like daffodils)? Unless you dig out the bulbs it will keep regrowing.

I have a feeling you're mistaking convolvulus with oxalis; one has runners and incredibly long rhizomes, the other bulbs -

I've been told that breaking off a runner then dipping the remainder in Roundup (or chemical of choice, I guess) is more effective than spraying it.

We've got both it and oxalis, and both require more vigilance than I'm capable of.

In general I have had good results with weedkiller that brushes on cut ends of the branches/roots

Im on a crusade with Oxalis and Poa Annua. The time I spent setting up the vege gardens, they got away from me a bit

Oxalis I have sprayed with Tricopr. I figure I just need to bang away at that each time I see a new one, so that over time it is reduced, if the sprays can kill the roots in and near the exposed plant

Poa. I will spray with Roundup (Glyphocate)  Ill end up with patches on the lawn. After 2 weeks I'll mow the patches down low, break up with a spade and/or thatching rake, then sow grass seed and cover with soil/compost mix. Again, If I bang away with this method, I hope to reduce the living rootstocks over time

Anyone had second thoughts about using Roundup given the bad press of recent? I've switched to an organic weedkiller, only downside is its insanely expensive compared to Roundup.

I feel that any chemical is a problem, so I dont bother with the media issues. I just take care with what I use
