What is the maximum depth (distance from fence) you want to make a garden before it becomes problematic to do the gardening etc?

As well as smaller garden plants, we'll probably want a few trees to provide a bit of shelter from the wind and maybe some shade.

This is just in a residential suburb.

Thanks

Max of about 1m if you don't want to have climb in there to weed etc.

Bark the gardens, weeds barely an issue. Only weeds I get are in the driveway gaps. Then you can go as deep as you like.

think about how big (round) the trees you are planning to plant might be. you need to make sure they wont end up pushing on the fence. that will give you your minimum size. it might even be enough...

If it's a wooden fence then don't plant up against it - nothing rots fence palings faster.

What kind of trees are you planning to plant? have you checked their root structure/depth etc. also? In terms of weeds, you can get plants with good ground cover which should reduce the chance of weeds growing around the trees.

Thanks for the feedback. We want to get a bit of height from the trees (maybe 4m).

Sounds like the best approach will be to put down weedmat and bark and choose low maintenance plants for the ground cover between the trees.
