Is it normal for the underside of your steel deck mower to rust out like this after only 18 months? Its a bit more than surface rust!

This is hosed out after use and put away in a garage.

I have a 10yr old Ryobi steel deck mower with zero rust underneath it so I'm a bit confused when Lawnmaster tell me its not covered by warranty...

I just dropped my 2 year old Makita steel deck lawnmower off for warranty assessment yesterday, will see what they say!

I wonder if the washing has anything to do with it? Not saying you shouldn't but in the mountain bike side of things over washing is definitely detrimental to the bike.

That looks quite severe in places. There are different grades and types of steel.

If it didn't it should. Leaving a layer of grass stuck to the deck would be much worse than hosing it clean.

I have noticed that less and less mowers seem to be made with alloy decks these days which generally doesn't have this issue. I have a viking that is 20 years old with no issue, except the back steel flap rusted out, so got it replaced with a plastic flap. You did used to have to pay more for a model with an alloy deck, and the cheap models used to have steel ones, but some manufacturers no longer even have an alloy deck option. My parents have just got a new battery mower one and that has a steel deck and no alloy option which IMO it should be alloy for the high price it was price. Hopefully it has a good layer of galvansising under the paint.

I'd only buy an alloy deck - most steel decks are rubbish and require immaculate cleaning to remain rust-free. I rarely clean my alloy deck.

No, but as a tradesman I look after my tools. Not cleaning/hosing the caked grass out after each cut just does not sit right with me.

As a comparision, here is my 10yr old Ryobi steel deck mower, there is no rust on it that I can see, just some pitting from stone hits.

Absolutely not. I'm not thrilled with it (at about 5 years old now) but it doesn't really impact usage, so I'm not stressing about it. The rest of the generally basic build of the mower will probably give way before the deck becomes an issue in terms of actual usability.

That looks in good condition. Do you put something on the surface such as WD40 to prevent corrosion on the unpainted areas?

that looks like cheap steel and low quality paint job. the paint hasn't worn off, its lifted off. you can get steel that rusts less, but that costs more.

this is why i don't buy steel lawnmowers.

This is probably the key here. How does the manual say to clean it? Are you cleaning it the way the book says to?
