Just going off the head line and in article “So, it’s possible that Netflix could be lowering prices to redeem itself.”

If it backfires, they’ll have to do something to get customers back.

Maybe it won’t backfire and be a roaring success for them, just have to see how many devices get locked, how hard to unlock a device, and does location need to be updated every time IP address changes which could be quite frequent for some etc.

Got an offer  today that may mean a switch to Disney+ to try something new.  150 flybuys pts if you join (worth about $55 in fuel savings).

I’m not subscribing to multiple services simultaneously to get more variety, so I'm considering switching every few months.  (Probably too lazy for this to actually happen though...)

Back to Netflix sharing, I didn’t find their explanation very clear for the following:

  • Laptops (own screen or TV screen)
  • PCs (monitor or TV)
  • Firesticks
  • Chromecasts
  • Chromecasts with Google TV

Looks like the later 3 might be treated the same as a TV?

So far I've seen almost zero reports of significant legitimate user impact.

Time will tell I guess.

You make it out to be a real issue. Its not. As stated here, the IP is ONE factor.

Its an overall assessment. They assess many indicators. Notably wifi. They all hone in to a solid general location. No doubt the algorithm is aware of that. I could allow people to freeload 20km from here today then 50k elsewhere tomorrow, never get nabbed. But the actual scenario of household and 3 freeloaders probably will be.

I dont really get that 4 people in my household is ok, but why arent the non household freeloaders ok? Its like back in the day in the Sky thread, why can't we get every piece of content that exists globally for $15 a month? (it costs)

Paul1977:

We have 2 smart TVs using Netflix, plus some iOS devices. Haven't had any emails or prompts to set primary location.

We might have signed up using a DNS service before Netflix was available here though. I honestly don't remember, but maybe Netflix thinks we have a US account even though we're in NZ and very seldom use the DNS service to change region away from NZ.

We've never paid with a US payment method, and currently it's billed through Spark.

I think I signed up well before it was available in NZ, possibly when I was in the US. I am sure I am on a US plan since it shows the HD plan is being billed at US$15.49/month which is probably more expensive than if I had a NZ plan.

But it's getting billed to a NZ credit card after I switched the billing from a US one.  I don't have a smart TV and watch NF when I do (not that often) on either a Google Chromecast with GTV, Roku or phone.

TL;DR You have to create your own VPN at the Primary Location - beyond the capabilities of 99% of Netflix Subscribers.

BTW, one month after the supposed crackdown I am still happily using a shared pw...

Not really. Tailscale is actually incredibly simple to use so is a good idea.

I’ve been waiting for someone to post they’ve been blocked. If it’s over a month wonder if they’ve quietly backed down?

Has anyone had personal experience of how travelling with Smart TVs works yet....

I've read all the "make sure you devices are logged into your home network before you leave" malarkey, - but it mentions nothing about how you actually go about allowing a smart TV at a remote location to be authorised.

We're off to the Bach over Easter, and I don't want to spend time having to battle throuhgh customer "service" to get Netflix on the TV to work...

My account is being watched around the world , every time i watch on my mobile , i get an email from Netflix saying my account is being used (so far) in Turkey , England and Ireland at the exact same time as i am watching it in NZ, if i am not watching i get no notifications. Weird.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Did you set Tauranga as your home location on your TV or did Netflix decide for you?
