tdgeek: They also pay rights for NZ. But there is no revenue in NZ to fund those rights payments.

Except that there isn't any Netflix NZ anyway: the Netflix NZ company is a holding company with 2 directors - neither of whom is based in New Zealand - and 1 shareholder, which is Netflix Inc. incorporated in the Netherlands. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that nearly all the other national Netflixes have the same structure. All of which is a roundabout way of saying that all the revenue from everyone goes back into the same big pot, regardless of where they paid it.

Your argument that Sky or Lightbox or Getflix or TVNZ might be willing to pay less for local rights if there are fewer local subscribers has some merit but I don't not subscribe to Sky only because I have US Netflix. They also only let me watch what they're currently broadcasting, they cost far more, and even after paying that far higher price they still make me watch ads. I don't have an antenna that can receive FTA - satellite or terrestrial - so I can't watch it even if I want to. I tried Getflix once but cancelled before the trial period was up because it was pathetic. Lightbox has no movies.

If Netflix is one big pot and they don't pay rights in NZ my posts are wrong, shame on Netflix for not making a shelf company and giving us a Netflix login that works to all Netflix content

Well even if it is all one big pot, they still have to attempt geo-blocking to comply with their existing licenses for now and I can't complain about that.

But I do commend them for having the goal of increasing global licensing. Hopefully that encourages competition based on quality of service rather than exclusivity

As long as they do not become the only provider of content... Monopoly & bugger comes to mind :-)

Agreed! I highly doubt it will come to that. They'll never get HBO content for example

Check out Netflix's investor relations pages. The long term view is interesting as are the quarterly interview transcripts accompanying the financial reports. I appreciate that they make it so easy to see what they are doing.

The financial accounts 4Q 2015 show a 22.6% margin for US and -38.5% margin for International which averages out to 10.1% because the US has three time the revenues of the rest of the world. Most of international only started in the second half of 2015.

Im happy with just netflix NZ, half the stuff on US is crap anyway and there is plenty on NZ.

BUT

in my opinion if netflix were serious about not allowing geo blocking they would terminate those users breaking their T&Cs. i believe the truth is they would rather have their money than lose so much revenue which would obviously happen with many people not happy with the local product.

again, why should it be up to the NZ tax payer to fix a problem the company doesnt want to fix?

If you're interested in vintage SciFi then the NZ Netflix is not for you (suspect that Sky has it all locked up).  You have to use the US one..

Ignoring the 36 pages of existential debate about what is OK and what's not...  with dns4me and netflix on xbox, I'm getting a message along the lines of "you are currently using a proxy or unblocker, please turn it off and try again"  Will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

Some provider has worked for me today. Not immediately: I changed the setting, tried and had the same "proxy detected" message. But in a few hours kids came shouting that it's working again, and indeed it is for now. I'm guessing this is a cat and mouse proper: netflix will keep blocking ip's or ranges or whatever, and providers will try new ones.

I wonder how long it will remain profitable for some of the proxies.  If the cat and mouse continues, with access being limited and intermittent, will people stick with them?  Will they have the capital to ride this out compared to the capital (and contractual requirements) from Netflix to combat them?

Just a reminder guys please keep what works for you private as per this thread: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=151&topicid=192306

Last thing we want is content providers catching on to these "privacy companies" and adding even more restrictions breaking things again in the process.

The unblockers, and I was one, will keep paying, and the users will wear it. In some ways its annoying but for geeks its a sort of fun. Some will

drop off but it will be alive and well

I was thinking about this, there's nothing stopping content providers from signing up to these services and reverse engineering what they're doing really

I'm guessing reverse engineering is against the Ts&Cs of the unblocking services. Not saying it's not being done. But it would be amusingly hypocritical.

I would be sure that the very small cost of signing up with an unblocker for a year for the purposes of breaking them would be less than the cost of coffee in the Netflix labs for a day. Its cat and mouse. Ideally Netflix would like to break the unblockers, but if there is enough disruption to put the bulk of the public off, then they have probably succeeded.

I have been quite amazed at some people saying thing like 'I just signed up this week and its not working today - That's it - I am cancelling' - Some people are so easily put off - others never give up!
