CutCutCut: What's Plex run like on these now? I heard initially there was some issues.

Do the Fire TVs shipping at the moment come with a version of the firmware early enough to still be able to be rooted?

And is there a sure-fire way to ensure the Fire TV doesn't get upgraded firmware that will kill the USB port being used for accessing an exernal hard drive for media?

Finally - is there a stable and easy-to-use method of loading BBC iPlayer on the Fire TV? I've read that there may be official support for it sometime in the future, given the Fire TV's now available officially in the UK, but I'd love the opportunity to have it now - give my kids some decent alternative to the kids' cr@p on Netflix...

How to purchase from NZ?

I tried to purchase the AFTV from Amazon US using my NZ Westpac Visa Debit card, with my US YouShop address, but the transaction was cancelled.

Can the Amazon Fire Stick have the DNS configured on the device or must one use a DNS unblocking service from the router?

Can XBMC be installed on the AF stick and does it run well?

When entering the credit card address use the YouShop address. Alternatively you can buy an Amazon Gift card for yourself, apply that to your account and then use the account balance to buy the AFTV.

When you first set it up it pulls down the latest version of the firmware (which can't be rooted... yet), you will have to research this to see if you can stop that happening, i know its an issue that people are trying to overcome.

Yes once its rooted you can kill the update service (which i have done), its a 2 min job and stops the device from looking for updates.
You can get iplayer through xbmc addons, as well as a tv player app that you can sideload, until there is an official app these are the best methods.

The firetv stick is no different to its big brother, same software. When you setup the network on the device you can set up a static ip which allows you to input dns. Xbmc can be installed and runs fine as expected.

I am having constant buffering issues at the moment on the Fire TV - it is buffering every minutes and started a few days ago. Not much of a geek sorry but any help much appreciated.

modem: dynalink rta1025w
streaming over wired connection
Flip broadband

Def prepared tp purchase new modem, change plans etc to fix this. Just checked Nextflix on the tablet and it is streaming fine so does that mean it is not modem related?

Do you know if Plex handles DD and DTS from MKV files? I read a few forum topics around the fact that DD and DTS didn't work (cannot remember if it/was an Optical only problem or HDMI too)

My Fire TV has just arrived and I would like to set it up this weekend, my Electrician has not arrived yet to install a Cat 6 cable from my office router to where the TV is in my lounge. Can I set it up using a wireless connection and then change the setting to wired once the Electrician has done his bit?
Can you connect the Fire TV to a receiver which is connected to my TV or should you only direct connect to the TV?

I have used mine wired and wirelessly with no issues on either.

I currently have mine connected via HDMI to the TV and optical out to a receiver.

The only trouble I had with my wireless connection was that I could not seem to use adb to sideload XBMC but when I connected it with an ethernet cable it sideloaded fine.
Back to WiFi now and it streams everything well.

Okay, I have my Fire TV set up and running using Unotelly and Netflix. Am enjoying watching old episodes of Cheers and Frasier. Everything is working fine, except when I watch an HD movie. I sometimes have the picture look as if it is moving frame by frame (fast so that you just notice a slight pause between frames). I have the Fire TV running thru my Yamaha RX1030 receiver via HDMI and audio in the Fire tV set to Dolby Digital.

Forgot to mention that it is picking up the service by wireless connection thru my Spark VDSL router (Speedtest gives me 34 mb download and 10 mb upload)

I am having an Electrician arrive Thursday to install a cat 6 cable from Router to Lounge so as to have a hard wired connection. Should this solve the jumping issue?
Just thought I would ask in case anyone else has had similar issue.
