tdgeek: Is Netflix created content in all countries?

You mean like Orange is the New Black or House of Cards?  Ummm.  No.

But apparently it would be okay to watch these via Netflix US as Netflix as the content producer gets the same return.
And the property rights that TVNZ (Orange is the New Black) or Mediaworks (House of Cards) dont matter.  That those companies paid money to have the rights in NZ means nothing.

But remember these were created and licensed before Netflix was properly in nz....so they're a weird orphan. Is master of none, daredevil, inspector gadget, and other later created Netflix content available in more countries (or nz specifically)

But isn't that the crux of the regional access situation? Mediaworks and TVNZ paid for rights, the purpose is for the NZ viewers to watch their networks, and ads that display on them?

But both these shows were created by Netflix for Netflix  subscribers in the US.  That they were onsold to other media organisations is, what, completely irrelevant?  The crux of the argument was that the content owners in the US were getting their fair return if other countries watched the US catalogue.  It still ignores the property rights of companies that are distributing the content.

If it were so simple then the studios would be falling over themselves to sell all their new content to Netflix - but they're not.  Why not?  "vested interests" in regional jobs and distribution.  Rubbish.  ABC-Disney would have no problem selling the content to a global and axing hundreds of middle-man jobs around the world if it made economic sense.
What if Disney decided to stream direct-to-consumer themselves instead of via Netflix??   Oh, wait.......

I am happy to use Netflix NZ, Sky TV to cover my needs. If a particular series is not on I wait and do other stuff in the interim. I simply don't need everything in the world now.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

mmm, coincidence or not but I can't seem to stream Netflix US this morning via Unotelly. Hulu works fine. Noticed the problem first on my Mac. Apple TV looked fine until I restarted and then same problem. I have logged a support ticket which so far was not helpful.

Probably coincidence. Checked your IP address has not changed? Blocked/redirected public DNS?

I can stream House of Cards just fine on my Amazon Fire TV.

Checked all the obvious things but no joy.

I changed to one of Unotelly's Syd DNS addresses and okay now. Did this both on my mac and ATV. When set to the Unotelly NZ DNS servers can get hulu fine but no netflix US, when running one of the Sydney DNS all is okay and can get Netflix US.

Interestingly the Syd EC2 DNS also doesn't seem to work for Netflix US.

Glitch, or they are taking action? Many here seem to feel that its just a case of say summit to placate the content owners, but surely they must do something? Like piracy measuresfrom way back, so stuff to knock off the Joe Averages, and let the geek type workaround it, would nab the bulk of the offenders. I see all this as transitional. Linear TV is still the biggest thing ever, on demand TV will take over, I feel we are 1/5 or less of the way there. Slooooow take up, but that will accelerate a lot in time. And the business model will evolve. Maybe though it won't, as if we end up with Skyflix, TVNZfliz, etc, that will just mean that every provider will be on demand, and maybe the rights issue will still exist. That would mean fragmentation and maybe costs will mean that to cover the bases we go back to a Sky type cost, spread over 4 or 5 providers. I still find it amazing that I can either pay $5 or $7 for a movie, or pay just double that for unlimited. Same as music. Who loses out revenue wise??

But what about old TV programs from the 1950s to the 1990s that are on the US Netflix site but not in NZ.  I suspect that Sky has this all tied up for their Zone, Jones and Comedy Central channels  for years to come.  I for one refuse to pay Sky something like $75 / month just to watch one channel when I can get it from Netflix US via my NZ Netflix account..

It looks like Netflix may have already started cracking down on some devices. dns4me have posted the following on their Facebook page:

"Hi everyone, we have had a huge number of queries about netflix's recent announcement of cracking down on proxies so we thought a quick update was in order.

So far they have hard coded googles DNS in the following devices (Android, Android TV, Roku and Xbox One) there may be more but these are the devices we know about for now. This is an old trick that they have been using for Roku and Android for a few years and is fairly easy to get around.

To get around this you need to have a router that supports static routes if your router does then all you need to do is add a static route for 8.8.8.8 to your routers IP this basically blocks lookups to googles DNS and forces the app to work on our DNS.

We are still investigating what else they are doing so there may be some service interruptions if they make further changes.

Thanks
Jason k
dns4me team"

I use dns4me on my ATV3 and so far still have access to other regions, no issues on the Mac or Windows laptop either.

At the end of the day they may be successful in restricting the regions for less tech savvy people, but I suspect the type of people that visit geekzone will have no problems getting around the restrictions, unless of course they make subscriptions bound to a certain region.

freitasm:
NonprayingMantis: Could make the argument that it is entirely Netflix fault.

They have signed contracts with content providers where they pay a much lower fee to only sell the content in one or two countries. The contract also likely says they MUST take steps to stop customers accessing the content outside those countries.

Except that Netflix is now available in 190 countries so this argument doesn't stack up.

Except it does.

If they had the same content in all countries legitimately, there would be no need for unblockers.

The fact that they have very different content libraries across all countries means they only buy rights in some countries and not in others - which was precisely my point. They have to take steps to stop viewers in other countries from accessing the content where they don't have the rights.

Hahaha I just went back to Sky. We don't watch a lot of TV, we do watch movies and the NZ Netflix catalogue has enough now to keep us going. That may well change though and we could look for more.
I do think regional restrictions in a Global market place seen an oxymoron and they should be done away with.
