I have a shield TV 2017, and I would rate my FireTV as performing 25%+ better. I prefer the interface, the eco-system. I bought the Shield TV to try it and for google app store compatibility only.

I consider the FireTV to be the best piece of AV gear I own. That is saying something, considering the other gear in my stack. It's just seamless. The only thing stopping it from being perfect, is Google Play Store.

I would like Chromecast as well. We love the Fire TV's here. We have two. The 2nd gen fire TV has had the new interface for a good 6 months. I had given up on the 1st gen getting it.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I can't speak to the CC  Ultra, but I have the 2016 CC and I think it's much worse than the android tv I have built into my Sony for performance. Hard to beat for the price.

Oops. Meant Chromecast functionality built into the Fire TV. As much chance of that happening as the play store....

Ah yeah. I remember I had that at one stage..... Off to reinstall. I'm still on the old interface here....

freitasm: I am away in Auckland! I want to see new shiny things!

Is this on the original Fire TV or new models only?

Original model..

I read it was coming to the original model - good to know its true (especially as thats the one I have!).

The only thing is that Amazon roll it out on their terms and its rolled out in waves.

Unless your device is in the current wave you cant force it to update.

You can do a "Check for updates"  on the FireTV..

Yep - but unless they have decided your device is in the update batch you won't get it.

ha ha my 1st gen fire tv got the update. i think it's pretty nice although i've seen quite a few people preferring the old version.

but then i only use youtube and plex on it so i'd be happy just to have those two icons on a blank screen.

getting more pissed over the google tv youtube app not allowing me to turn off auto play and no watched indicator that my next amazon order will probably include a 2nd gen fire tv.

I find the lack of video length on the thumbnail to the the worst. Start watching something and see its 12 mins long. GTFO.
