Quickflix if you really think about is doomed to fail because the core audience it should be targetting will not use it as they use Netflix or download all their content.

And those that might use instead of Netflix would only go to it if it is the same as Netflix. But due to how Netflix works Quickflix if it followed the same model would never make any money so why would those behind it carry on?

Presumably you have some statistics or references to back up that statement?

We use Quickflix because its dead easy for the other members of my household as its built into our TiVo.
It gives us tons of content over and above what's on normal TV, it cost half what Igloo does, and an eighth of Sky. Netflix is an option, but would involve us either purchasing an extra device, or mucking about plugging a lappie into the TV.
We have no complaints about the content, there's lots of it, plenty of old and recentish TV and lots of movies. And as the recent announcement said, there always more on its way. Looking forward to more Dr Who, have been catching the kids up on the David Tennant years.

I'd agree its doomed, mostly because it doesn't have enough value over renting a dvd, its not cheaper and the quality is worse.  You could argue is more convenient than driving to the store but I don't think that is enough

I'm not sure its impossible to have a netflix like service in Aus/NZ. I guess scale would be an issue but on the flip side surly the licensing fees for the region are a lot less.

Then again the artificial regions thing is really a relic of the old TV network distribution of physical transport so eventually that will fade away (although it may take many many years).

Seriously? Not cheaper than DVD? Its $15ish a month. Our DVD shop has non-new releases at 5 for $10 for a week. Over the past few weeks we have watched enough hours of Quickflix that it would have cost us well over $50 in DVD rentals, not to mention the travel to the DVD shop and overdue fees when the kids inevitably forget to return one.

We pay US$7/month for Netflix and another US$7/month for Hulu (different programs). Just the fact David Attenborough series are available for kids to watch without having to pay DVD rentals and having to drive to the other side of Wellington to find a DVD rental store justifies the price.

Quickflix model is similar and they are constantly adding more content (see thread I posted yesterday about new rights signed up).

No, it's doomed. It's just interesting to see how people used to say "I download via torrent because it's not available here, otherwise I'd pay" but when available people still torrent...

Having a service available and having the content you actually want to watch available are two separate things.

I use Netflix and Hulu but as many HBO and Showtime shows are not on these services I also torrent. If these services had all shows I wouldn't. My understanding of Quickflix is that it has even less selection of recent shows so whilst it is a service, it doesn't have content therefore the continued use of torrents.

I meant the movie fees, heres a good example Peter Pan 1953 (over 50 years ago) cost to stream $6.99
http://www.quickflix.co.nz/Catalogue/Title/PeterPan/12531?catalogueFunction=16

There basic older movie selection is really quite good I think theres some thing like over 600 movies on there now

The monthly streaming fee is $14.99 per month and the tv selection is not great (unless you like old bbc) vs netflix $9.63 (7.99USD) a month (breaking bad / house of cards / walking dead / orange is the new black / dr who/ sherlock .... etc )

Don't get me wrong I would like quickflix to succeed I wish it was as good as netflix, I would sign up today if it had a better tv series selection and lower pay per view price.

The Freeview thing may be what saves them, if all those tv's can suddenly stream on demand thats a huge userbase

As I said, the content is slowly coming through. Just a couple of days ago they've signed up new TV series.

I am in the same boat. If the content on Quickflix was the same as Netflix of course I would use a local service. But I see they're working in bringing more and more.

I agree we need Quickflix to succeed. The problem is that a pay operator in New Zealand holds all the content rights. We will never a Netflix type service in NZ in the current environment.

That said, I use Netflix.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

using offshore providers like Netflix and dubious downloads is part of the problem and makes the Quickflix failure prophecies somewhat self fulfilling.

I find the device limitations more a barrier. I don't feel like using a computer and don't particularly want to buy a new TV to access quickflix.

Netflix has the advantage on being on most modern media player devices. Quickflix needs to do the same thing. Apart from tivo (which unless its second hand, I don't believe you can buy any more) the only way to get it on a device in NZ is on a tv and some bluray players.

it's getting even worse because now you dont even have to download the torrents, click on the link and its streams straight away in full 1080 if you want , like Netflix.

in this instance "devices" means - things to put it on something > 10" screen.
