Im not endorsing or promoting it...

But i saw this on a news site today, it looks quite interesting.

A group of people made a torrent client that looks and works like netflix and reckon they wont get in trouble as its an open source project and they dont make money from it and they dont host the media

http://getpopcornti.me/

Haha, Ouch Hollywood

But if they dont want people to use this they need to bring netflix to NZ, If they dont then they cant blame people for using stuff like this in my opinion

I guess this is legal in the way that torrenting is legal.

However, they may come unstuck when the ONLY content available on it is illegal content. (and as far as I can see that is the case)

It's one thing building something which people then might use for illegal purposes, but when you build something where the *only* possible use is illegal, that is surely pushing the boundaries of the sort of 'safe harbour' type provisions in law that protect the likes of ISPs, Google etc from being prosecuted for allowing illegal activity on their network.

Having said that, I tried it yesterday and it works really well :-P

Yeah... and theyre going after services like Mega Upload and Hotfile, which were cloud services which SOME people used for illegal purposes. Destroying a man in the process

When there are services like this, made specifically for watching movies illegally. Also the pirate bay as the name suggests its specifically made for piracy

this is not new most torrent sites have the ability to do this with Ace Stream, instead of downloading the torrent you can stream and watch it, no downloading involved.

sorry also be warned that it chews through your data, as you are uploading as much data as you are downloading.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Well to be fair this only just launched yesterday, so it would have been hard for 'them' to go after it before now.

'They' have tried taking down piratebay too.

If this uses bittorrent tech to feed the media around it will come under the skynet law as that hates on p2p systems. But if it's a collection of direct links it might be OK.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Right.  the main difference here is a very nice user interface - which makes a big difference for the masses.  piratebayand other torrent sites are pretty terrifying if you don't know what you are doing.

Yep, and unlimited plans with fast upload like VDSL or UFB even better since I can be helping out anybody else using the service by using it myself.

The more people in NZ who use it, the more 'local' seeds there will be and so the better the experience for everybody.  (and the ISP needs to buy less bandwidth on southern cross)

Everybody wins!  (except the studios)

If the studios got their act together and dropped all this stupid licensing that only certain countries can get it blah blah everyone would be happy.

Plus we dont really have a service like netflix in NZ which many people would be happy paying for, but we dont have it.

Its like TVNZ on demand, You can only watch it on certain mobile devices, If you have a non samsung android you cant get the app (unless you manually install the APK). This leads to people uploading the episodes to sites like youtube and everyones happy. Same with people in other countries that want to watch shortland street

I would happily subscribe to Netflix or Hulu, I did try VPN but it was just not reliable enough...

How about trying a DNS service as an alternative? My understanding is that these shouldn't have the same impact on a connection as a VPN. There are a good number of DNS services available and they're pretty cheap. I'm using Getflix: it's cheaper than their main competitors, and it's thus far worked flawlessly with both Netflix and Hulu, plus I've just sorted out access for BBC iPlayer.

So if this uses BitTorrent, can it "see" your IP address just like when downloading something on BitTorrent? Wouldn't this be the sort of content that will get you a "three strikes" notice?
