I went to download a file from PirateBay and saw warnings about using a VPN. I have a subscription to DNS4me (for RugbyPass) however I know that my DNS routing service isn't the same as a VPN. However, can I use my DNS4me subscription to help me with regards PirateBay?

PirateBay won't let you use vpn?? What ARE they logging you for then???!!!???

Seriously though, asking here for ways to break the law "safely" is likely to get you ban-hammered🙈

they are just trying to scare you into subscribing to a VPN.  it's not illegal to download a torrent in NZ .

I'm not sure what benefit you think there would be. This can't stop you from being tracked if you're downloading copyrighted content.

It's just pop-up ads on piratebay and other sites trying to scare you into buying a VPN service.
Dns4me is not a VPN service, so using them for your dns lookups would mean potentially your iP address can be tracked.
Probably very low risk of actually being tracked, but still a possibility I guess.

And you don't download anything infringing on Pirate Bay anyway, it only gets you a pointer to the infringing file.

Accessing TPB via DNS4ME Will not protect you this will have no benefit, when you download the content your torrent program directly connects to IP address (peers) DNS is not required, if you download content that is being monitored it will still report your IP address, Unless you have a VPN that routes all internet traffic though the VPN.

You don't need a VPN, you need an adblocker to block all that sort of "omg you're being tracked" crap that those sites serve up.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

There's a thing called peerblock that has been recommended in the past. It blocks known tracking organisations etc. You have to pay annually for the list - only about $20 I think.
I have no idea how much it really works.
You have to remember to switch it off after use because it'll also block the BBC, Pandora music etc.

Ummm ok just googled and everyone says it's rubbish. So I'll leave this here to say DON'T use Peerblock!

You also have to remember that NZ has different legislation around P2P file sharing in that any enforcement action has to be initiated by the studio through the ISP, there is a $15 (or is it $25, I can't remember) per notice issued by the ISP payable by the studio. Movie Studios are thus far refusing to pay for this enforcement action as they do not pay this in any other country (and if they were seen to be paying it here for our paltry few million people, it could open up a hyooooge expense in bigger markets overseas).

Not saying it won't happen, but the only enforcement notices I have read about relate to music, who seem a bit more aggressive with their copyright protection.

Even if you did receive a notice under the Act, its a three strikes rule, so the first 2 are simply warnings. If you receive one, then you can look at taking protective measures.

Ofcourse, you shouldn't be downloading content subject to Copyright, there are plenty of legal and relatively cheap options to get movies legitimately and keeping the funds going back to the studios so they can continue to produce movies, but thats a different kettle of fish.
