Ok, so Sport is up on TVNZ+

No MotoGP heading, ok. There is just Motorsport. There is a raft of horizontal links, including motorsports I am not aware of but no MotoGP. And some go back to January.

But I can watch NZ basketball vs Lebanon, so not so bad.........

Seems a sh1tshow as past sport streaming was

As result of the Sky monopoly that makes sport viewing a nightmare in Aotearoa. The government should forget the supermarket duopoly and deal to the Sky monopoly.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Sorry Mike thats an OMG comment

Sky doesnt host these sports, Spark Sport does, thats competition not a monopoly. Now TVNZ does, also competition, not a monopoly. Unless Spark Sport and TVNZ were/are monopolies? There are movies and other content on Netflix is that a monopoly? No.

Sky has never, ever had a monopoly.

Yea its getting worse. I was keen to watch SVG Nascar race on Monday but apparently we have no options in NZ

I pay for SkySportNow $45 a month just to watch supercars and NRL both are Australian controlled events. There is literally no NZ content worth watching these days. Superboring rugby I think is all they have now?

Unfortunately, we don’t currently hold the rights to broadcast NASCAR.

I used to be a huge Nascar fan, been to Talladega, and an Atlanta race where my guy Mark Martin, No.6 Viagra car ran third. But Sky dont have the rights now. Must have been recently as Im sure Ive seen it recently on the guide?

I guess its like Netflix, great. Now there are a LOT of movie/TV outlets, thats competition. Just need to pay $20+ for each of them....Obviously not helpful if you are a Nascar fan though

Sky's dominance and monopolistic behavior has seen sport viewing out of reach for many including our national sports. This should be addressed and in many of the more "free" markets they would have been subject of anti trust actions.

For what? Anti trust is very specific and the NZ market for television coverage of sport is very unlikely to fall under this.

Anti syphoning legislation is what is used in other markets, it has nothing to do with anti trust.

Anti trust regulations are designed to encourage and regulate competition. Sky is anti competition.

You've got a country with 5 million people, there's always going to be limited competition.

There's nothing that Sky is doing that is specifically using their market power to limit competition.

They acquire sports rights in a free and open market and lose sports rights from time to time to competitors. Those competitors find it difficult to stay in business because NZ is a tiny market, not because sky is anti competition.

NZ Rugby records first profit since 2017, media rights income hits NZ$80m

2022 figures from a total of $188m

Obviously a necessary evil. But does likely mean other sports rights get missed out as a result.

I get the impression this isn't/wasn't to be the new spark sport. But the leftovers of transferable rights they had as broadcast partners.

And probably anything that was locked to a single holder was not able to be has been stripped and up for tender (welcome sky)

Can you explain how they are anti competition?

Yeah, IIRC it was stated as the new home of sport. It seems that its what they used to show on Saturday, small, cheap sports. Id wager they paid SS not much to take it over, probably a fire sale, as TVNZ didnt actually what to be the new home of sport, just pickup cheap low tier sports as an added feature.

Sparks financial year is 30 June so I guess that the end date for Spark Sport, any rights, such as MotoGP etc could expire later.

Didnt Spark Sport have Euro rugby and some soccer? Doesn't seem to be there either, unless its off season

Someone says it over and over so it must be true.
