Slapping myself on the forehead once I realised the 'departing' figure is those leaving MIQ... NOT leaving the country as an immigration statistic.. Durrrrrr (I was asking myself why we had so many departing people.. but that's not the right figures!)

Those numbers are here:

https://www.customs.govt.nz/covid-19/more-information/passenger-statistics/

For this month up to Monday the 21st 8068 arrivals & 11,267 departures, so yes more departures than arrivals.

Given NZ is capping arrivals and many other countries are not, it is not a surprise that our departures are more.

Also it has got to a point where New Zealand is asking many of our temporary guests to return home

Friday the 25th is a key date as this is when the second round of automatic visa extensions run out.

Eligibility for the subsequent automatic temporary visa extensions is much more narrow. NZ is essentially telling those on the likes of working holiday visa, student visa's etc that are not eligible to apply for subsequent extensions that it is time to go home.

https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/media-centre/news-notifications/the-government-has-made-short-term-changes-to-nz-temporary-work-visas

https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/media-centre/news-notifications/work-visa-extension-aligned-for-partners-and-dependants

https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/media-centre/news-notifications/visitor-visas-extended-new-covid-19-short-term-visa

With regards to the link immediately above, this announcement of extension of visitor visa's was only announced on the 4th (21 days prior to most people still in NZ on visitors visa's expiry). Some visitors visa holder might have already locked in travel plans to leave NZ prior to this announcement (even if they preferred to ride out the pandemic some more in NZ).

Also a lot of Temporary work visa holders employed in the likes of the hospo industry have been made redundant, and as such will have needed to go home.

Another rubbish story,

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/09/covid-19-hamilton-man-in-isolation-denied-a-chance-to-see-dying-father.html

"A Hamilton man in isolation has been denied compassionate release, even after testing negative for COVID-19 three times in the last four weeks.

Haydon Kerr landed from Dubai last Wednesday in a rush to be with his 79-year-old father during his final stretch of his battle against cancer. "

Bold done by me, last Wednesday isn't even a week in isolation. If other tests were done overseas, still need two weeks here. What's the matter with the media, don't they understand the economic and health damage that can be done. We've seen a person incubate it past a 12 day test, though hopefully that is very rare.

The ladies heading to Wellington with 'fullproof and approved precaution plan' that really wasn't, has pretty much shot it for anyone with hopes.

It's really not a rubbish story. The MOH has lost a number of these cases where they haven't been applying the law consistently or fairly.

The Christiansen decision was particularly damning where the MOH almost entirely ignored the legal framework for making these types of decisions. It's worth reading as it is damning (in legal language) of the MOHs process for this type of decision.

It’s a rubbish story to me, I don’t agree with people coming from overseas, trying to short cut isolation to go to a funeral/ or to see someone in their last hours.

"Lawyer Simon Foote QC has taken several failed exemption cases to the High Court after similar requests for exemptions had been denied."

The several failed exemption cases links to only the Christiansen case, wonder what the other cases are that went to the High Court.

Good to see the government turning people down for funerals etc, guess they’re considering compassionate leave now, and then rejecting it. Where as in Christiansen case they only considered medical reasons from what I could understand of it. Either that or they changed the law.

I just see the article as trying to get public pressure on the government to make a risky decision that benefits a few, and risks a lot.

I have a temperature and headache. Healthline asked me to have a test this afternoon. That despite not having a sore throat,  not having a runny nose, no coughing, no shortness of breath, no loss of sense of smell, not been on an international trip, not been in contact with a suspect or confirmed case, not been in contact with airport or customs or MIQ staff.

That's ok. Will do it.

Hmm, late announcement is a bit unusual?

Trying to spin the figures before they release?

[edit] i see they released figures while I was writing this haha.

3 new cases -- not sure if that is concerning or not. At least they know the source.

I wonder if those 3 have been running around the city?

Whoa:

Today there are three new cases of COVID-19 to report in New Zealand and for the first time six historical cases are being reported, made up of one confirmed case dating back to February and five probable historical cases connected to the case also dating back to February.

None of the new community cases are connected to the Auckland August community cluster.

Today’s three new community cases are a family group linked to a previously reported Christchurch to Auckland chartered flight. They have been self-isolating over the last three days.

Of the six historical cases dating back to February, one of these is a confirmed historical case and there are five probable historical cases linked. Additional detail is provided below.

There are 37 people isolating in the Auckland quarantine facility from the community, which includes 17 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 and their household contacts.

Three people are in hospital with COVID-19 – one each at Auckland City, Middlemore and North Shore hospitals. All three patients are in isolation on a general ward.

Since August 11, our contact tracing team has identified 4,014 close contacts of cases, of which 4,006 have been contacted and are self-isolating or have completed self-isolation. We are in the process of contacting the rest.

There are three additional previously reported cases now considered to have recovered from COVID-19.

Our total number of active cases is 62; of those, 28 are imported cases in MIQ facilities, and 34 are community cases.

Our total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is 1,468.

Yesterday our laboratories processed 6,938 tests, bringing the total number of tests completed to date to 924,637.

Contacts from Auckland flight

An update on the case of the man who left MIQ in Christchurch having returned negative tests for COVID-19 and then tested positive in Auckland.

There were 86 people on this charter flight. All have been contacted and are either in the process of being tested or have been tested.  63 have returned a negative test.

In tracing this man’s history and how he became infected, we can update that one of two remaining cases from his earlier Delhi-Fiji flight has now been sequenced and been shown to be a close match.  The second result is still pending.

We continue to investigate how his infection may have come about.

Historical Waikato cluster

Today we are reporting six historical cases, including one confirmed historical case and five probable historical cases all linked, in the Waikato.

These cases present no risk to the public.

This infection occurred in late February following exposure to an infected person from Italy (another family member).

At the time the family member was visiting New Zealand, they became ill with symptoms consistent with COVID-19, and the wider household then also became ill.

At the time, they did not meet the case definition for testing for people with defined symptoms who had travelled from or transited through China. Italy had not at that point been identified as a country of concern. This meant the New Zealand household was not tested at the time.

Today’s historical confirmed case (a man) recently developed a sore throat and sought testing. The weak positive result, combined with serology test results and case history, is consistent with an old infection.

At this stage, only the man will be counted as a confirmed case as he has returned a weak positive result on the PCR test. The other family members will be recorded as probable cases.

This would mean that the infected family member from Italy is effectively now the first case we are aware of in New Zealand, as they have reported having symptoms on arrival on 21 February, a week before our first reported case on 28 February.

Consequently, the other household cases would represent the first locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, given the onset of symptoms from 29 February for the confirmed case.

Further investigation will continue.

As part of the investigation, close contacts of this man during his recent mild illness have been tested as a precaution and have returned negative tests.

Interesting. Not sure what this means - but testing is picking up again which is good to see. Low number of close contacts not-yet-contacted.

What I think interesting on that press release is "This would mean that the infected family member from Italy is effectively now the first case we are aware of in New Zealand, as they have reported having symptoms on arrival on 21 February, a week before our first reported case on 28 February. Consequently, the other household cases would represent the first locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand, given the onset of symptoms from 29 February for the confirmed case."

"Today’s three new community cases are a family group linked to a previously reported Christchurch to Auckland chartered flight. They have been self-isolating over the last three days."

This flight was on the 11th, the "long incubation" case was detected on the 17th,  so between the 11th and the 20th these new cases have been in the community??...

But yesterday we were told this in regard to testing those near the "long incubation: cases on the CHC-AKL flight

"Of those, 29 have been tested. These include the people closest to the person on the flight. 28 have returned a negative result. The remaining person returned a positive test with a high CT value yesterday, which suggests an old infection. "

So the question is what is the epidemiological link between these new cases and the original case....

I do really get grumpy with the Ministry of Health who dump these bombshells in statements with no one to try to answer the many questions that it generates....

Yes so many questions without any stand up to allow us to learn more. Frustrating.

I do think it's a shame the stand ups have stopped (or are less frequent). I can only imagine we have the bleating from National and the media that it was a form of campaigning to thank for that.

Would like to see a stand up fronted by Bloomfield or his deputy return - some will still claim this is political but they can get bent. Public servants doing their jobs is not political.

Unless they can get on top of this I think Auckland could be stuck in Level 2 for a bit longer ...

But on the plus side, the time periods are shorter with the original "long incubation" case leaving MIQ on the 11th, but was unwell and then tested on the 17th/18th

Whereas with the original cluster there was an unwell person on 31 July, who remained undetected until subsequent cases were detected on August 10/11....
