I was meaning we should have closed the borders and quarantined arrivals from the start, essentially so at the start what we are doing now. Essentially like Taiwan did. That would have avoided all the lockdowns.

But better late than never.

Let's agree on expressing opinions after reading the content.

I think some people mentioned way back that no government would have done this at the start, and if they did, would risk mass rioting etc, which I agree!

Ok, so I guess January 2020, we close all borders, setup MIQ the following week, and with the massive lack of capability of our underfunded health system that uses antiquated systems, get that sorted the following week.

NO ONE knew the impact then. NZ politics already critcised us for an over reaction, too soon , too late, too long, lets open up a travel bubble next month to Victoria, etc. Beats me how you can complain about an easy fix being there as apparently hindsight is not a word, yet some wanted stupid things to happen, such as bubbles to Victoria, etc, slash the lockdowns.

Like most other sane countries, yes in NZ they were indeed watched. Like most other sane countries we went early. No, that wasnt January 23rd or Feb 2nd

How BTW is Italy going? 3677 new cases yesterday, 2677 the day before. Plenty of practice has been in place there. NZ, still 0. Decide your result from that

Fair call. I just get miffed over irrational posts where we were supposed to foretell eveything from back then. Look at where we are now, not only did we eliminate it, but when it snuck in, as expected, it was dealt with. Thats the only 90% you need to know, the other 10% are learnings we have learned.

Very pertinent point here. Its a fine line between an acceptable risk and the economy. You can help the economy and manage Covid, but it has to be managed.

That's one of the big issues of pacific "bubbles"

NZ and other source countries need to be assured that there is effective protocols to deal with the water traffic, ...

Its easy enough to demand that the Cooks or Samoa not accept any regular flights from outside the bubble, but small pleasure vessels are much trickier to enforce, also interactions between local vessels and external none bubble vessels at sea needs to be managed too.....

Thanks - That was an interesting read. I was unaware how much this was a just in time response at the beginning and interesting to compare my memories of what we were being told vs the facts and issues
(ie PPE supply).

Overall seems to be a willingness to highlight some negatives, but I feel it does have a positive spin.
I'll be nice and assume it feels like that because we did well relatively well thanks to mostly good management/decisions and our fortunate geography, so we deserve to feel positive.

Probably not.
French Polynesia is part of France, so people from metropolitan France brought it in on "internal" flights

If there were any controls on these "internal" flights, they were very late

Probably not.
French Polynesia is part of France, so people from metropolitan France brought it in on "internal" flights

If there were any controls on these "internal" flights, they were very late

I think you will find, with a little bit of research, that French Polynesia was in fact closed even to your "internal " flights. It was the decision to open up, including those initial flights from France, that has caused the problem.

Nothing to do with colonialism.

From what I observed, hardly anyone using the Covid app today in stores, and none writing their name down on the list at the front doors of shops. Testing has dropped, and not up to Australia testing in states. We don't know what percentage of tests in NZ are in the community vs at the border.

It feels like complacency is starting to occur again. I wonder how long before we get another local case popping up, potentially leading to another lockdown. Level 1 does leave us very vulnerable. IMO we shoudl be requiring businesses make sure people are recorded, as contact tracing is key to preventing that occurring. I also see NSW have some local cases popup in the last day.
