But we have a lot to owe to Dr Baker for our current situation in NZ, and being largely covid free, in terms of fronting the media and saying what needs doing. The government has done much of what he has suggested in the most part, but tend to be slow moving.

I bet some of those businesses affected by this latest case wish that scanning had been mandatory, so they know exactly who has visited.

Also some of the journalists asking questions at 1pm - people seem to be weirdly deferential to some of the people at the press conferences and take questions about issues with the response extremely personally. But there have been issues where persistent questioning has resulted in change e.g. testing of border workers and our systems are better for it.

Sure it isn't an accident.

Dr Baker has nothing to do with the response at all. You word it like he is not in the picture but his news articles are?

Probably the same busineses that say its too much hassle like last time

Have you got examples? Im sure there is a LOT of stuff going on behind the scenes that is also going over the questions that get asked at the standups

Yes he was. He was providing advice to the government early on in the pandemic. Not sure if he is still doing it, but about it here https://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/wellington/300194614/wellington-epidemiologist-who-pushed-for-lockdown-honoured

Absolutely. It is also one reason we need strong media in NZ.

Geektastic: Show me the aircraft that carries 4500 on a single monthly flight.

There are currently 4,500 people in managed isolation across the country.

There may be. However, in my post I suggested only a monthly flight. As in one. A month.

Do you honesty believe that the media knows more about the many experts involved in this response?  Whatever is spouted by know all journo's isn't relevant. if they repeat facts for a change, such as what any real experts think, these real experts have already voiced their input to the response team. Surely this is obvious?

And I am sure he is now, as are many others. Im glad we didn't honour those that said after two weeks, its too long and its too much. It could have been a whole lot worse if the focus was on the economy, as we have seen elsewhere.

This is the kind of reflex push-back against any sort of challenge to officials that I'm talking about.

Journalists ask questions. It's what they do. It's not about trying to be smarter than the experts. If officials insist something is happening and journalists are being told that isn't the case, should they just ignore it?

Our Covid19 response would not have been anywhere near as successful if we hadn't seen hard questions asked about GPs declining tests in the early days of L4, or testing or border workers, or nurses working across different facilities. I'm glad they did.

You routinely challenge the officials if said officials suit you to challenge. The rest gets left. If you feel that the health response and the advice from the many experts is ignored and the media fix that, thats up to you. Maybe Dr Baker can pick up a  few things from them as that seems more worthwhile that what these many experts feed to the response. Now if the Govt was different.......

If the 'negative test before flight' works we should see some kind of drop off in MIQ positives.

Maybe.. Maybe not. We're seeing a massive increase in the number of people coming here with Covid, so while the testing should reduce this, it's never going to eliminate every case.

Given a test can cost $350 in the USA (USD250 seems to be the going rate), there is a risk that a $1000 fine may not be sufficient to get everybody tested. For somebody who has been waiting months for viable flights, and MIQ bookings to become available, plus paying big $$ for the flights, it may be tempting to skip the test to eliminate the risk of the result stopping their ability to get home.

At a highly unethical level, there is a risk a person with no symptoms & a positive test may choose to conceal their test result, in order to get into NZ where our treatment is free and hospitals are not overloaded.

Testing at LAX is USD$125 for a same day PCR test (results within 3-5 hours) or $85 for a 1hr antigen test.

Just submitted a formal complaint about TV1 News tonight when Simon Dallow led of with the SA strain being "More Dangerous" even though later in the broadcast we had footage from the press conference today where the it was stated that this strain is more transmissible but no evidence that it is more dangerous.

Given the testing problems in Northland , to me this was irresponsible, inaccurate and sensationalist reporting which will only add to the problems of the right people being tested.

Very often as a result of the contacts they have, the media will be fed the correct line of questioning to ensure a particular issue is publicly brought to light. They don't need to know more than the experts, they will have experts educating them.

I don't think anyone expects it to be a fix all, but it would be interesting to know the numbers being turned away at the airport or passengers simply not showing up for their flight due to a positive test result. It's still worth doing this year (foreseeable future) until widespread vaccination has taken place and there are more answers than questions.

Going by a story the other day. It isn't a case of 'show us or you can't board'

But 'welcome to NZ, your certificate please... none? Oh dear. Heres a fine'

Vs 'see ya, back you go' or not even getting on

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/434664/customs-warns-traveller-over-lack-of-covid-19-test

From 29 January, fines of up to $1000 can be issued for arriving

Why is it any different to someone arriving without the correct immigration paper work. They get put back on the plane and returned to the point of embarkation. So far as I am aware it is the airlines responsibility for ensuring the correct paper work is in place and, if not, they bear the cost of taking that person back to where they came from.
