In the meantime, being asked to self isolate  from North Italy still exist, but not for the rest. Knowing that many scarpered when the Northern area lockdown was announced as it was leaked. This was days ago. Now it all has been locked down, nothing has changed. Thats poor

After reading this,

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/irans-coronavirus-problem-lot-worse-it-seems/607663/

and considering that 3 of our 5 cases all the way out here in NZ, (with a tiny Iranian diaspora) are sourced from iran,  I am severely worried for them... It may be being transmitted very freely...

The wider this spreads the greater chance of this becoming endemic at which point the only real hope for some form of control will be a vaccine. A viable vaccine is many months away so a viable treatment will also need to be found also many months away.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Hard to tell. Flight Radar has not shown any reduction of aircraft over NZ where as the Italy airspace very clear. I know several people who have cancelled internal travel and using video conferencing instead. Actually many companies may discover this to be a awakening and that all the air travel for meetings etc was a waste of money and will use video meetings ongoing.

I am very likely to travel to the UK in the coming weeks.

Just curious if anyone else out there has travel plans and their thoughts of if they will go or not.

They're not infecting volunteers with SARS CoV-2 that causes Covid-19, but coronaviruses that cause the common cold.

Thats how I feel, which is why I feel lockdowns work. Not very palatable, but they work. China is now falling down the list of new cases. Yesterday I quoted Italy at 7345 cases and 366 deaths, thats up to 9000 now and a 100 or so more deaths. Its not inconceivable that Italy itself could rise to 80000 cases in a couple of weeks.Unpalatable as a lockdown is, you are locking down the virus, it has nowhere to go. The infected get sick and the vast majority will get over it. The rest are not near the virus. Theoretically, when everyone that got sick, is well, the virus is gone. Its not being carried anymore, it ran out of hosts.  It does seem the only way, especially when a vaccine is eons away. Whether we hurt the economy now, or wait (while the economy is still being hurt anyway) and then we end up with the virus everywhere, where it cannot really be contained. Then we will no doubt go into an Italy lockdown anyway. Not suggesting we do it in NZ tomorrow, but it might have to happen, so hit it sooner, than cause a long issue later is my opinion. Its hard to see that we have many choices. Sit on our hands and hope (which is ok right now) but if it starts to feel that its getting out of hand nip it in the bud then, don't wait forever. Tourism  wise if we did have to go hard sooner than later, we become a good destination, health wise. China locked down early, and despite 1.6 billion people, and that they fled Hubei and spread it far and wide, it worked.

I do have some hope that with todays medical knowledge, and the efforts that are happening everywhere to locate a vaccine, that a vaccine or some treatment that will hobble the virus, might happen sooner than later. But we do need to fastback trials, we dont have that luxury of time

I agree. Here, right now, its probably lucky if all we have is these 5. I heard about a probable today though. 9000 are self isolating, unsure how many of those are real threats or safety first.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120141954/coronarvirus-ministry-of-health-gives-update-on-new-zealand-outbreak

From the above:

Healthline has registered 8963 people or households for self-isolation since the process began, the ministry said. There were currently 2334 registrations for self-isolation, while 5929 have completed isolation.

I wouldn't have expected that many to be self-isolating at this early stage? Do you really think this is necessary?

Dratsab:

I'm hoping nothing happens around public gatherings - i.e. concerts. Have my tickets and flights booked for Iron Maiden on May 13 and Level 42 on May 20.

The big Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals in the US just got postponed until October.
https://variety.com/2020/music/news/coachella-stagecoach-festival-postponed-coronavirus-1203526766/

In practice, I can't see how things are going to be better in October, but if they say "postponed" instead of "cancelled" they don't have to refund the ticket money right away. I'm not sure how the musicians get paid, but I suspect they are left waiting until October for most of the money and they don't have too many other options where they can play.

Most likely Glastonbury and all the other big festivals are under danger of cancellation.

There used to be a time when you went on tour to promote your album, but in the streaming age you release a new album so that you have new music to perform live and people will come to your live shows. If no one comes to your live shows, then there is no longer a business case to keep releasing music.

Some of these veteran acts are getting older and older, but keep touring because the money is good. Some might decide the risk is too high in their advancing years and announce their retirement. This is very bad for the music business like many others.

So far there have been almost 9,000 people or households self-isolated in NZ.

There's also possible new cases:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/120154881/coronavirus-northland-man-who-went-to-tool-concert-now-sick-being-tested

Seems like his partner is also showing symptoms.

The woman said she rang the Healthline 0800 number and waited for over an hour to speak to someone.

That's not good to hear - I'd have hoped that they'd be quick to answer - waiting for an hour is terrible (if true).

I dont now where they came from, I can only assume most are from international arrivals. Right now its 2334, with 5929 been and gone. Im glad many have if most have come off aircraft from at risk areas.
