Aussie GP will now be a massive question mark given this might be enough to cite force majeure.

Not sure Pacifica is a smart idea anymore either, given we've seen what happens when it gets a head start on circulating in Western nations.

Who caused Spanish Flu, MERS, and any of the many that did not originate from China?

A documentary I saw recently said Spanish flu originated in the USA (Iowa?). It was likely a bird flu carried by wild ducks, which then infected farmed poultry, which infected a farm worker (they gave a name but I don't recall it) who then joined the army. It then spread through the training camp and was carried to Europe.

John Barry's theory that it started with a pig farmer in Haskell, Kansas, who reported to Camp Funston in Fort Riley, Kansas, looks like one of the more likely and accepted hypothesis.
Haskell's (outdoor) pig farms were under one of North America's main waterfowl flyways, where even today a seasonal 'rain' of avian feces falls..

Since 2005, when the viral gene sequence was first determined - from the body of a flu victim buried in the Alaskan permafrost, researchers have hunted for the earliest virus samples in preserved bodies of victims. Jeffery Taubenberger, of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has found one of the earliest so far – in a US victim.

Pigs as the intermediary is thought to be very likely - it also infected millions of pigs in 1918.

For those with the time, the Sam Harris podcast 'Making sense' has two episodes this week with excellent information and advice (including the importance of practicing self isolation to reduce the risk of overburdening the health system).

There might have been far fewer dead Koreans, Iranians, and Italians if they'd had the guts to declare it a pandemic when it was obviously was - about a month ago.

Really? Would any of the countries mentioned have changed their response due to a different label

Does sick leave accumulate? I've just looked at the app my company uses for payroll (Datacom's MyPay) and it says I've accumulated 80 hours of sick leave.

Israel has been *very* proactive about shutting its border, and it is causing huge strain:

It’s a grim “natural” experiment to see whether NZ is making better choices (Note Israel has 8% area of NZ, population 1.8x bigger than NZ).

I have to take my wife to the Doctor first thing this morning after talking to them. They will meet us in the car park with masks and kit on. To say I am worried is an under statement.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Not normally.  Your 80 hours is possibly 10 days, so double the statutory annual minimum which is a pretty standard allowance - 5 days isn't enough.

My SO gets 15 days allowance, it accumulates but is capped at 100 days.  Lots of self-employed "small business people" get none at all - so would be mainly relying on insurance. They'd better be checking their policies to see if there's an exclusion for epidemic/pandemic.

You can get up to a max 20 days or 160 hours sick leave. You may be approaching your sick leave anniversary & your hours will then jump from 80 to 120. As you will get 5 more days.

Thats why you feel its a bit light

Not sure on the law, I get 10 days accumulates to 50

Here is the law

Accumulation of sick leave

Unused sick leave under the Holidays Act 2003 is automatically carried over. For example, if someone uses only one day's sick leave from the five-day entitlement in a 12-month period, he or she may carry over the other four days, so in the next 12-month period the total entitlement is nine days sick leave. The maximum accumulation under the Act is 20 days leave, although employment agreements can provide either or both more generous sick leave and accumulation.
