Really? Would any of the countries mentioned have changed their response due to a different label

Yes - probably.

There's been a concerted effort by people with vested interest (ie Money) at stake to "talk down" this pandemic.  Maybe people are changing their views now a bit, but I've still been hearing "it's just the flu".

Probbaly not. Their reaosn for delay was that it will cause panic. There is already panic when people read the news. It may well have caused those that think its just the flu, I;m not bothered to self isolate, to take it more seriously

Just checked our company intranet to see what it says about sick leave and found this:

If you have worked for us continuously for six, (6) months you are entitled to five, (5) days sick leave.  You are able to accumulate up to fifty, (50) days sick total. You are able to take sick leave if you or a person dependent on you is sick. In some circumstances you may be required to provide a medical certificate.

How does this compare to other companies?

Eh?

Declaring it a pandemic is supposed to do exactly that - change the response. It was bad enough when NZ extended our response beyond WHO guidelines, and get directly criticised by China for doing so.  I think what we did was sensible - but officially it was a bad thing to do.

Not declaring it a pandemic early enough hobbles governments.

5 days after 6 months is the minimum required by law, so is standard in NZ. I don't think they have to allow it to accumulate. The rest is the standard laid out in the law.

By comparison at my work I get 150 hours per year effectively just under 19 days. We are allowed to go in to negative balance on sick leave. Attitude is don't come in if sick and make the rest of the team sick.

SO has essentially infinite sick leave - there is no talley kept. However, leave there is also a privilege, not a right. The employer has every right under NZ law to deny AL, for whatever period they see fit, if circumstances require it.

Free sick leave can come at a cost...

Given how long this has been going on, are you sayoing that every Government this morning will go" Ok, lets get serious now"? Its been serious for a long time. Has WHO changed all the rules as from today? There is north of 120 Million locked down, IMHO its been serious for some time, and panic, which WHO says was why they delated labeling it a pandemic. I dont think any Govt is treating it as "just the flu" but many individuals do, IMO it might wake some of them up

Its been unofficially labelled a pandemic for a while too, and rightly so

There's an awful lot of small business/self employed.  Not sure how well insurance covers them or if there are pandemic exclusions.  Some insurers in Chch after the quakes wiggled out of paying out business interruption because of policy wording, buildings that were okay, then it wasn't the quakes that caused the interruption but red-zone cordons that kept customers out, so claims were declined.

I love it how, if a company has say 5 days SL, that most/many employees coincidentally have that allowance used each year. It gets abused

I'm not saying that - but there's been massive kickback against imposing travel bans etc by businesses who depend on travel etc.  If governments took actions that went against WHO advice, then arguably those governments are responsible for their own decisions.

"Don't panic" might be great advice, but it's also resulted in under-reacting - in my opinion.

What Ive observed, rightly or wrongly, is that most Govts seem to follow WHO. I'm not aware if WHO has upgraded their guidelines overnight, and I feel that Governments are no more aware of the seriousness as they were yesterday. Hopefully those individuals that thrash the its only flu, might take it more serious, but this is just my own feeling

wikipedia:

"Panic is a sudden sensation of fear, which is so strong as to dominate or prevent reason and logical thinking, replacing it with overwhelming feelings of anxiety and frantic agitation consistent with an animalistic fight-or-flight reaction. Panic may occur singularly in individuals or manifest suddenly in large groups as mass panic (closely related to herd behavior)."

Panic is the worst advisor after fear.

@MikeB4: I have to take my wife to the Doctor first thing this morning after talking to them. They will meet us in the car park with masks and kit on. To say I am worried is an under statement.

I hope all goes well and it comes as nothing to worry...

Yes I agree.

However also true that complete absence of panic doesn't mean "reason and logical thinking" prevail.  History is not going to be kind about how decisions were delayed as these events unfolded.
