Have we been lucky - or just well placed here in NZ as to why there hasn't been any more cases confirmed beyond the 5?

If we really want to, shutting the border completely will work very well for us because it’s extremely difficult to breach our border, unlike many countries such as those in mainland Europe where you can just walk across undetected.

Nah, we can't close our borders completely, because NZ citizens will always be allowed back in.  Yeah, you can try to quarantine them all when they arrive, but you can't close the border completely.

Voluntary isolation seems to be effective, and seems to be people are complying (well, the Govt said that)

The number travelling in from affected countries as tourists must have plummetted, so if we got lucky early on, now the numbers are low due to bans, so much less exposure.

"Figures provided to Newshub by the Prime Minister's office compare the number of Italian and South Korean passport arrivals to New Zealand last week compared with the same period in 2019.

"For South Korea, 361 arrived in 2019 and that number dropped to just 36 this year - and it was about the same for Italians."

Cricket ODI NZ vs Australia in Australia under discussion. Three options. They are playing the game as usual, playing it without a crowd, or abandoning the match.

Batman:

you should post in the alternative coronavirus thread, someone said there is no evidence school kids play a role in transmission of this disease (or something to that effect)

There is absolute scientific evidence that children transmit the virus.

I have locked the "alternative" thread - it started as "How are you preparing yourself" kind of discussion and by the end of the first page it had already turned into the same discussion as this main thread.

I have a cruise booked for the Caribbean via Celebrity in April and still planning to go. It would have been an easier decision to reschedule if the insurance companies were to come on board and cover us for hotel cancellations and flights. We have been closely following how the cruise ships have been dealing with this and so far, they appear to do a lot more than the public health service to save their reputation. That said, still a few weeks to decide to cancel and with the situation changing every day, we may need to take a hit on the wallet.

One of two things - we're missing out on detecting community spread (even thought lots of testing is being done) or by some miracle community spread isn't occuring yet.

I spent a couple of hours last night doing some modelling based on visitor sources, flight arrivals, etc. from the last three months and my conclusion is that it's extremely unlikely that undetected community transmission is not occurring.

Of course, I hope that NZ somehow dodges a bullet here - but I am not optimistic.

Did you include travel bans?

Nor am I.  To make it worse, we're probably destined to deal with the peak of the first wave of a local epidemic coinciding with the biggest economic shock since the late '80s.

As per a previous ppst we only get around 300+ Italians and 300+ South Koreans every year. Thats not much. Its now NIL. China has been nil for a long while. Other countries have 14 day isolation so no tourists will bother, let alone many that are too scared to travel anyway. I feel the exposure now at the border is really low. So we have some luck , we probably now dont need so much luck. And of people are being very good at self isolation, it will be hard for an outbreak to occur, at least at overseas levels

I feel the economic outlook will be worse than the late 80's. Sport is only sport but thats being shut down day by day. many politicians are infected or exposed. Shares down 10% yesterday in Europe, USA COVID-19 in tatters. I feel that 2020 will be only about this virus ands its medical and vast economic effect. A lot has already fallen apart globally.
