Phil Goff has done something Jacinda Ardern could do, overrule officials. After all, she is the captain of the ship.

Wise decision to cancel Pacifika.

Will she press ahead with the Christchurch memorial? with the middle east situation, a gathering of members from that community is a terrible idea.

I have little faith in her ability handle this. Its one thing having advisors but she needs to be able to read public sentiment and make calls that at least gives the perception its under control.

Yeah, I think we need to step up self isolation to china levels... and have harsh personalities for breaching (Singapore canceled somebodies residency status and deported them for breaching).

That guy that was from the diamond princess that publicly stated that he was really upset at being quarantined at the army base, as he needed to work on his business really drove home to me that kindly asking people to self isolate is quite a risky plan.

Even then, I would probiably only trust our on nationals & residents.

Sounds like in china, you have a notice taped to your door describing your quarantine, and you get checked twice a day (both your temperature, and that you are home). If your home is unsuitable (say you have flatmates), you serve your quarantine in a hotel room.

The list or risk countries is getting pritty long. USA, Europe & Australia all now carry risk. Perhaps the pacific island's are the only places with minimal risk.

Is he a virus or health expert? No.

And for the umpteenth time the PM is not handling this, Ministry of Health is, or do they know nothing?

Going by that and below, whatever has been decided is 99% decided at best, Id say the question has been, "ok we can postpone, but we are hear, and other sports play no crowds so why can't F1 play no crowds?" The issue has been unfair on the cancelled team, but maybe they can award them some points based on testing??

The fans are already there. They have already stood in big lines at the gates within cms of each other. This is an abhorrent dereliction of duty of care to the fans.

This should have been cancelled as soon as the pandemic was called. This is so so much worse than Indy 2005. The safety of drivers, crews, fans etc has been put at risk through a total failure of leadership.

It's incompetence. It's borderline criminal. Now a huge concentration of fans are going to swamp cafes, bars, etc after having all mingled for hours.

If this call had been made earlier in the week, some would not have even come to Australia and many would have filtered home gradually over the next few days.

But no, they've now been in hotels and on trams and all sorts of other things.

This might prove to be pivotal moment if Melbourne goes the same way as Lombardy.

Its easier to avoid people by touch or the one metre rule in a CDB as opposed to a concert. Common sense I would have thought. Pity Jacinda doesnt have common sense as well. I guess her head scarf will protect her this weekend at Mosque memorials that also should have been deferred.

No its not. When a CBD as ONE example, is an ongoing daily experience, and the crowded public transport assembling it all. Then we have the workplaces in 15 storey buildings and elevators. Its not common sense its politics, and that doesn't belong in a serious crisis. That's why MoH is running the project and the PM asks them for info, as reported often. But good to see the MoH has no common sense. Again, this is the wrong thread

Probably neither. And such a view is not really conducive to good preparation.

There are scores of countries with fewer (many, much fewer) cases per 1m population. They include countries with smaller and with much larger populations, many with much higher population densities, and others immediate neighbours of China (Vietnam, Mongolia, .. ).

As others have pointed out, only just over 3 weeks ago, Italy only had 3 cases confirmed.

Taiwan was one of the few jurisdictions that was prepared, having earlier learnt lessons from SARS. Despite their proximity to mainland China and an early jump in cases, so far they have not experienced the exponential growth in cases seen in most other countries where community transmission has taken hold. Sixteen cases by 6 Feb, only ~2 weeks after their first case vs only about 10 new ones in the last 2 weeks. A few other countries such as Singapore are also seen as role models but even there rates of infection have been less well controlled. Despite only one quarter of the population, confirmed infections there have increased at 10 a day over the last week.

You need to explain that. Are you aware that Italy had a travel bans from China in late January? Are you aware the Europe, EU has NO travels bans?? It would seem obvious that Italy did not catch it from China but from Europe. Eureope is toast due to no action. Its actually worse than the incompetence of the USA

But if you feel that our MoH needs to step down so that Jac Adern can take over, just say so.
