I see Italy now has 1000 deaths, But it says only 15,000 people are reported to have it. If following Chinas death rate, the number of actual people who have it could more than double that figure. Guessing a lot of people may not being tested, or wonder if there is another reason why their death rate percentage is a lot higher?

The answer is: they don't know the real (only the counted) infection number. There is nothing special with the number of fatalities in Italy.

There will be significant infections and deaths in New Zealand, it's inevitable. Managing that as effectively as possible while minimising other impacts is responsible and sensible.

As a high-risk individual, I get a little irritated at glib comments about 'effectively managing' my death. What you say may well be perfectly true, but show a little consideration for us oldies.

In the UK, their prime minister has announced that a lot of our older loved ones lives are going to be cut short by this event. Him saying this brought home the reality of what is occurring over in the UK, because it seems that unlike in NZ, they don't see it as being a low chance of there being widespread community transmission. The economic effects are going to occur no matter what, and other countries are essentially going to be shutting themselves off from travelling anyway.

So tourism is going to be almost non existent, due to NZ having no control over what occurs overseas. However if we keep NZ clear of this by isolating ourselves from the rest of the world, then at least the tourism sector maybe able to survive if we holiday locally. We have 5 million people after all.

A lot changes in just a few days!

Considering there haven't been any new reported cases, and the government has said the risk of a widespread outbreak in NZ is 'low', it is always possible that no one in NZ will die from this, if there isn't an outbreak. It does though depend on how many have it now who are self isolated and whether they spread it. Or whether we get anyone coming into NZ with it into NZ.

So New Zealand will isolate itself forever? The point of all the initiatives is to flatten the infection curve and minimise impact on the health services. At this point it is largely impossible to stop globally so it will reach New Zealand and it will be widespread.

I believe New Zealand is still a humane and caring society unlike the zero empathy you are showing here. Its very easy to be gung-ho with other peoples lives.

It's not gung ho, it's not good it's bloody awful. It is also reality. These are the exact decisions that the government is wrestling with. It's not a simple topic and it can't be dealt with easily. There are no good or easy decisions only how to minimise harm to society.

The government is having to make choices about what is more important, people dying or people living in poverty. This is why they are trying to maintain relatively normal conditions until they can't be maintained any more. There will likely come the time when isolation happens and it is likely to cause huge numbers of people to lose their jobs, houses and businesses.

The posts that are saying the borders must be shut now and New Zealand will then be safe are worse. They are making assumptions that this can be stopped when all indications are that it can't be, only managed.
