Inevitable response from the UK:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/uk/300380201/covid19-delta-variant-has-wrecked-hopes-of-uk-herd-immunity-warn-scientists

The Delta variant has wrecked any chance of herd immunity in Britain, a panel of experts including the head of the Oxford vaccine team said as they called for an end to mass testing so Britain can start to live with Covid-19.

Scientists said it was time to accept that there was no way of stopping the virus spreading through the entire population, and monitoring people with mild symptoms was no longer helpful.

Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, who led the Oxford vaccine team, said it was clear that the Delta variant could infect people who had been vaccinated, which made herd immunity impossible to reach even with high vaccine uptake.

...

"We don't have anything that will stop transmission, so I think we are in a situation where herd immunity is not a possibility and I suspect the virus will throw up a new variant that is even better at infecting vaccinated individuals."

Welcome to the post pandemic world, where life expectancy / quality of life just got reduced for all, thanks mainly to global failure to do what was needed when it was needed.

from New York Times:

  • 18-month drop in life expectancy. The coronavirus pandemic was largely responsible for shaving a year and a half from the life expectancy of Americans in 2020, the steepest drop in the United States since World War II, according to federal statistics released on Wednesday.

While it could be easy to dismiss that as "well that's because there was a pandemic", endemic covid will still continue to kill the elderly, and the immunity offered by vaccines is significantly reduced in that age group.

NSW cases today:

2 new deaths (including a man in his 30s)

Continued spread around NSW.

Hospitalised, ICU, and cases on ventilators arriving at a rate faster than they are being cleared.

And a lockdown that's not working well enough - but is still costing billions of dollars and causing misery to many.

Good to see all four QLD cases were in home isolation throughout their infectious period.

Not so certain about the comment by their Chief Health Officer though.

"As soon as we've got 70 percent of our adults, 16 years plus, vaccinated, we'll be able to do things so much more differently," she said.

A bit concerning in the light of the Israeli experience.  Despite considerably higher levels of vaccination than that, Israel's attempt at relaxation of restrictions has resulted in a large upsurge in cases that they have yet to make any headway on.  To the extent that they have now had to re-apply restrictions back to the level they were at when case levels were last falling.  Serious illness and deaths have increased considerably, albeit & as expected, lagging the upsurge in case numbers.

Time will tell whether the reimposed restrictions are enough as the Delta epidemic only took hold in Israel at the start of the recent upsurge in cases.  The previous period of falling case numbers was pre-Delta.

Over 6300 cases yesterday (9 Aug their time).  That's higher than their Sept 2020 peak 7-day average rate of cases & only exceeded by the Jan 21 peak.

Also of note that the stringency minimum Israel went down to very briefly in June that triggered the latest upsurge, is exactly the same OSI value (22.22) that NZ has been on for many months.

you have to go a bit further into the figures to see  it is different than last time and why it may be ok not to lockdown if people get vaccinated and still get covid.

China.
Well its a bit difficult to control an outbreak when you don't have one.
The citizen news reporters who exposed the depth and breath of Wuhan outbreak are still censured, or in jail, if they are lucky.

Atmosphere where no-one wants to be first to put their hand up, so you get blindsided.

Anyway message seems to be the same..
Shipping and Aircrew , Cleaners and your Lowly laborers in logistics.
Look after your often overlooked. Singapore and its laborforce as another example.
Travel is an existential risk anywhere you have transmission.

That UK response seems unnecessarily pessimistic about new vaccine development. I find myself wondering if this is based on AZ-oxford.

He had a meeting with Boris? From what Ive watched, there is no vaccination levels in play yet. Its an unknown. It reminds me, two weeks into our March lockdown, that "its too much, its too long" I expect and hope that the normal people who are non plussed with a vaccine due to fake news, will get plussed later on. The true anti-vaxxers, they can do what they like. Wait till December, more news, vaccine boosts, knowledge to play out yet. Anyone making a decision now for the future is a fool.

couple of questions on the vaccine booking site. Do they only allow one booking per time slot and why dont the dates and days match. My son went on to book for this Friday but according to the site the 13th is a Saturday so cant book, he clicked on Friday the 12th and got Thursday and then he had a choice of every time slot from opening to closing, 10 minute intervals which is why i am asking about 1 booking per slot.

The date issue is a bit strange - I assume he double-checked the month and made sure he wasn't booking for November?

I was due for my second vaccination tomorrow morning. This afternoon had a txt from my doctors surgery where I had my first vaccination saying that recommendation was now for an 8 week gap rather than 3. They had provided the new appointment time for the 8 week gap and asked that I just reply Y if I was OK with the new time.

Very easy and very efficient.
