PolicyGuy:

Fred99:

478 new cases / 8 deaths (7 plus the 15YO)

391 hospitalised / 66 in ICU / 28 on ventilators.

As I understand it, once you need ventilation you have only about a 50% chance of survival

😢

Also if you do recover it may not be over, there is a very high readmission rate .

I have banned someone posting anti-vaccine misinformation.

Wifes cousins family in the Philippines (entire household) is positive with the delta strain.

I understand all except one who is too young to be eligible are fully vaccinated with two doses.

The vaccine they had was a inactivated virus vaccine (i.e. not pfizer), won't mention the brand as no vaccine is 100% effective, and I don't want people to draw conclusions from such a small sample.

I understand one of them was using a Nebuliser (I assume they had Asthma or other airway condition if they had one on hand). The use of such a piece of medical equipment in a isolation hotel in Aussie was linked with an outbreak, so could have been a factor in the virus spreading in the household.

Obviously wishing the best for them, especially the child.

If they are vaccinated they'll probably be ok. The vaccinated people I know who have been infected (all Sinopharm) have all recovered with relatively minor symptoms.

Best wishes for them, it's pretty scary to go through.

What sort of symptoms are minor? Is it like a minor cold, or more like the flu and coughing?

There's a range from vaccinated people I know. From feeling quite unwell and having a fever to losing the sense of taste to just a bit of a headache.

Nothing that I'd normally go to the doctor for, except the taste thing. They all recovered fully in 1-2 weeks.

There's also almost certainly a large number of vaccinated people who become infected but are asymptomatic - ie no reported symptoms at all.

Could be tested for retrospectively by serology, but in populations with high rates of transmission then they could only guess if the infection was before or after vaccination.

Damn, I would have been prepared to happily 'bare arms' for this if I hadn't had my first jab already.

Any thoughts on Australian MIQ vs our MIQHotels.

The recent NT lockdown is from a a person who went through MIQ in Sydney and tested negative on day 10.
This suggests to me that the leak came from the MIQ hotel.

And it's not the first case in the last few month that has leaked form a hotel.
We haven't had this issue for ages (touch wood).

Why are we not seeing such leaks?
We seem to have about 1500 MIQ rooms a week available while Aussie has 3000 rooms a week available

Are doing things better?

- Do we have less cases coming though MIQ as we have less spaces?

- Is our ventilation different?

- Better trained staff and rules?

- Cohorting?

- Just luckier?

- Retiring less suitable hotels helped?

I recall China requires at least 2 weeks in a MIQ Hotel PLUS a week self isolating at home.
Does China feel the chances of a missed positive at a hotel is high I wonder?

IMO, less people arriving, learnt lessons from past MIQ leaks, staff told to FOLLOW processes, I heard they were working on ventilation issues so I assume they kept the more suitable hotels when downsizing MIQ. China can use more draconian measures, so its a lot easier to do whats needed to be safer, and they will get very high compliance, unlike the West

Cohorting has to be helping.

Most cases in MIQ are picked up very early in their stay. Chances are after that that no more cases will be in that facility and can't cross transmit.

Yeah - nah.

Trial limited to 56+ age group, that's getting a bit risky IMO.

If that's a double-blind trial, then a 50% probability of no immunity from a placebo and a 50% probability of getting a dose of something with as yet unknown efficacy - that really doesn't seem reasonable to me.

Then with the near certainty that with endemic C-19, we'll all be exposed - if there's some advantage from having exposure to antigens other than from the spike protein, we're probably going to get them anyway.

The Pfizer vaccine that we're offered protects well against hospitalisation and severe disease.
