Scott3:

I'm, surprised there is backlash.

Travel & tourism industry was going to get destroyed anyway, regardless of what the NZ government did.

At least this way (assuming it is enough to avoid COVID 19 outbreak here), other industries can keep working.

Regarding enforcement of the 14 day thing, we don't need it to be perfect, but we want the stack the odds in our favor.

Travel volume is about to drop massively, which improves our odds.

If say we had twice daily checks via door knocking (could even be done gig economy style with random people being paid $10 a time via an app) or Skype calls, combined with harsh penalties (visa's canceled & deported for non citizens, prison time for citizens). I would expect compliance to be above 99%. Might have to make a big example in the media and vilify the first few persons to be caught breaching self isolation.

Of course a quick law change will be needed to add breaching isolation to the crimes act, and set to set penalties.

We will need to highly scrutinize those coming in on visitors visa's (especially for stays under 14 days) as they will be much more likely to breach.

Self isolation is not Quarantine, you dont have to be locked in your house for 14 days you can move around you just have to avoid close contact , keep a metre away from people and avoid social gatherings.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

One thing the tourism industry seems to think that bookings were going to continue happily on and all was going to be fine.

It's wasnt.

It would have tanked anyway over the next months as the virus starts spreading. China market has already ended. How many Japanese are coming?

Once australia brings in rules, there goes the trans tasman travel.

This 2 week rule will cause a lot of pain to tourism industry that was most likely going to happen anyway.

At least this way we wind reduce the number of deaths and huge healthcare costs.

I imagine the hospitals will be thinking it's a great policy but they dont spend lots of money on pr lobbying the media or spend lots of money on advertising so expects lots of moaning tourism groups.

With a head slamming into a wall sense of frustration, I await the opposition parties to start "commenting" from a position of no responsibility about how bad current government is handling things.

In fact if it was 1939 we could expect any nz opposition or any stripe to say "Well let's listen to this Hitler fellow, he gas a proven track record in raising GDP"

The methodology may have some holes - but it’s surely a very good start. The strictest in the known world. It’s very easy to criticise.

I can’t agree it’s the strictest. The US has banned travellers from Europe full stop. Italy has 16 million people in lockdown. Etc.

It is the strictest because at the border it applies to arrivals from every country (except the Pacific Islands). No other country appears to have done that yet.

There are some questions as to what happens after the border. Many or some of those questions will be resolved over the next few days or weeks. It’s heavily reliant on self-policing but it shouldn’t be criticised for that because at this stage there’s no other practical way to approach it.

Its main value is that it will deter people from coming here in the first place - reducing the number of after-border issues and making those issues easier to deal with.

Surely that’s a very good start?

My client has cancelled her trip. That's about $30k worth of hotels and activities, food, fuel, transport etc etc that won't now get spent and we are just a small boutique operator. The big guns will be cancelling more than that per day, every day.

If it’s not being too nosey, interested to know in broad terms what your role is in this. Are you a tour operator, guide, transport provider or something like that?

My dad is getting (re)married next weekend (in Wellington) and tbh I can see a scenario where many guests cancel. The average age of guests will be 60+ and around 100 of them.

No one has any idea where we will be by the end of next week. If community transmission is confirmed I won't hesitate to cancel.

Seems extreme but why risk it?

We are all sick anyway. My wife has been sick for a week. Overnight my daughter has started sneezing and is blocked up and I feel something coming on. I am 99% sure we have a common cold but we won't be going to work if that's the case and I won't go to the wedding if any of us are sick.

Not sure what else we can do but I feel we're just delaying the inevitable with a finger in the dike.

It's about slowing down the spread enough that the health system can cope. Without restrictions, or with restrictions which aren't strict enough, we will end up like Italy, where doctors are having to decide who to treat and who to leave to die.

If it goes on too long, you'll see tourism businesses laying off staff, self-employed operators going bust and all sorts. The self-employed ones get no sick pay etc either if they catch it.

This is the reality. Would you prefer removing all travel restrictions? May as well remove all testing as well. How would we be if NZ was infected as Europe is? Better off?

You seem to be blaming the Govt, well all Govt actually, the cause of this is a virus.

couple of thoughts

1. i think implementing a 14 day quarantine for all incomers is going to work most of the time, as this will automatically stop a vast majority of people from coming in. then that 1% that comes in, that may or may not bring the virus, who may or may not honestly self isolate, makes it easier to manage (refer flatten the curve)

2. people say wash your hands, don't touch your face, etc but they forgot to say don't touch your phone before washing your hands ... if we're disinfecting seats and door knobs because they may allow transmission of virus ... well they've missed the dirty phone, which may (or may not) single handedly turn super users into super spreaders.

Good point. I saw somewhere about that, on CNN, but a good point

He didn't imply any of that.

He's just externalizing his feelings which is important and we are privileged to be part of his support group.

Super Rugby is off.   NRL on but in empty stands next round. Warriors will need to be based in Oz if they wish to continue playing.

I feel the Government should be talking to the banks regarding mortgage holidays and possible interest free government loans to cover any arrears that may occur for folks that are out of work as a result of this crisis.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
