Victoria Premier says that US being off the restriction list is ridiculous, they need NZ style measures. Most of Victoria's cases are from the US

Are you saying they are trying to escape the 14 days self isolation requirements, by trying to get back into the country before the deadline? If they aren't going to self isolate, (even voluntarily) then isn't it very likely we are going to end up with this virus in the community?. I can't understand why the government didn't make it immediate. Surely they anticipated this was going to happen? I thought NZs goal at the moment was to stamp it out, and this new move was to not let more any more cases from overseas, into the community. Unless people from overseas are self isolating, then they are entering straight back into the community, without that 14 day isolation period.

I can't find a timestamp to see when applied. Friday saw a similar do not travel for non essential however.

Yesterday someone posted a screenshot of a Melbourne flight to NZ that was moved by Air NZ to an hour earlier so it would arrive here tonight before midnight.

Disgusting.

Sounds like a lot of people are trying to escape back to NZ. And are paying big for asap flights even if they miss the midnight deadline.

Yes I am saying that. One day its BAU then its more flights bigger planes, escaping the 14 days. OTOH if these are Kiwis fast tracking coming home, it doesn't really matter as they would have come back next week or the week after from the holiday and not had to 14 day anyway. Might be some Aussies coming here for family event, so they come today and not next week. Again, if there was no announcement yesterday, the same people would still be coming here with no 14 days.

But I agree, immediate would have been good. Or the Govt took the attitude of my previous comment, that they are avoiding a 14 day that they would not have had anyway.

The world is locked out tonight, that's the main thing, IMHO

Virgin have cancelled and rebooked most the same today.
It also effects their staff

That is terrible. The government has the ability to change things themselves, so I hope they make sure those people on that plane were required to self isolate anyway. Infact all people arriving from Australia since the announcement, they should just require it.Hopefully people will voluntarily do it anyway. Just hope they are working today and are aware of what is going on, so they can act quickly on this.

I can't understand why some people coming into NZ from overseas, don't appear to want to deal with a bit of inconvenience, to protect people and the country. If I was returning from Oz, i would definitely be self isolating no matter what, and I wouldn't let any staff member return to the workplace without being self isolated first.

I disagree

Firstly, there isn't room for a "massive cut" when the OCR is already at 1.0%
Secondly, there is no evidence that this is a situation where an OCR cut would make any difference at all.

I expect that the RBNZ will say words to the effect that

this is an precedented situation and not one where monetary policy can usefully be brought to bear, particularly taking the current record low OCR into account.
They might add, but as a symbol of our willingness to be part of the solution rather than the problem, we've sliced twenty-five basis points off the OCR
fiscal measures must be brought to bear, as illustrated by the Treasurer's announcement on <whenever it was>
the RBNZ is taking a proactive stance to support and ensure the integrity of the banking system
the RBNZ executive is in constant contact with the government and stands ready to assist the government in any way possible

I think at the root of it all is a debacle in both planning and how information is being passed down. Don't blame people for being idiots when they're getting mixed messages.

The government has even changed the cut-off point from midnight tonight to 1am tomorrow - to allow for the flights that arrive around or after midnight - I usually catch these flights back from Aus - there are a lot of them too - coming over here as last flights out of Aus, overnighting on the tarmac here, and departing back to Aus as redeye specials.

The forward notice and now change to a 1am deadline actually sends a message that "there's nothing to worry about - yet". Of course there is.

Another case in Queenstown confirmed. Woman coming from Denmark via Doha, landed in Auckland 10 March, took Jetstar flight JQ225 to Christchurch then a rental to Queenstown.

I suppose it's not against the law for Air NZ to help people beat the self isolation deadline, but I hope someone reminds them about this when they're asking for government assistance.

From a quick look - between 11pm tonight and 1am tomorrow, there's 12 flights from Aus cities to Akl, 5 to Chch, 5 to Wellington, so 22 plane loads / 3 - 4,000 people who won't have to quarantine.

Knowing this I would say it's irresponsible to extend the deadline and irresponsible to change flight times.

I noticed that over the past few days Simon Bridges, whom I call Mr Negativity, has been very very quiet. In fact the Opposition per se has been quiet.

I hope there has been bilateral information flow between government and all parties without party politics and individualistic election year antics raising its ugly head.

This is or has become like a war cabinet scenario. After all we are ALL in the same Waka ❗️

In my somewhat Machiavellian opinion, the best thing the Labour Party could do would be to announce a "National Emergency Committee on COVID-19", with three members from Labour, one from NZ First, one from the Greens and three from National.

"This is a time for all New Zealanders to come together and act as one to help us overcome an unprecedented situation that could become a national catastrophe" says the PM, with the NZ flag behind her, and the Health Minister and the leaders of NZ First & Greens beside her [1m apart, of course] as the NZ National Anthem plays under.

One major advantage is that the message is true, and such a committee might probably do a reasonable amount of good.

The other major advantage - a political one - is that it would wedge National most dreadfully. They can't say "no" without creating an intolerable electoral risk, but if they say "yes" then they make it impossible for them to say "it was all them other guys' fault" because National has become part of the solutions and the failures too.

The only trouble is, I suspect the government are too well-behaved to embrace such a basically evil course of action
