Is feeling crook etc after the 2nd jab an indicator that the vaccine is "better" than if you had no or very low side effects?

Depends on who you ask. Nurse for my 2nd said that was a good sign - your body was on immediate defense. As a result working double time and taking a hit.

Whereas no reaction may be 'please hold, still working on it' :)

Reminder it's free for all day/open season.

- Open to 12s+ to get whole family in the queue now.

But we all knew that right.

Google tells me the answer is generally no, but might be yes lol. But science seems to suggest its a no, or its unknown

First and only paragraph I read:

So you are commenting on, and dismissing, an opinion piece you didn’t even read?

Yep.  Because the first paragraph as quoted is an appeal to provoke an emotional reaction.

Interesting stats coming from the NZ flu tracker (not the covid app). Only 50% of people with Flu symptoms are visiting a GP/getting tested. This is mirrioed in an Australsian survey where 68% of Kiwis stating they would not visit GP/Tested if having Flu symptoms. However the main reason is logical, although a bit complacent, the reason selected, it is too inaccessible, or words to that effect.

However, they are now looking at using the Saliva test, with news its sensitivty has been increased, which was the main issue with the test.

Im not sure how much easier it is to drive through and get a scrape put down the back of your throat via the nostril than driving to a centre to provide a saliva sample, but I presume there must be an easier way of delivering it.......

Don't quote me word for word, but I can get the article from the Mrs if anyone is interested in the exact wording.

I'd think it is a bit of a "myth" given it seems logical but not proven (to my knowledge).

I do know some people get a sore arm relatively soon after the first dose (nothing compared to the old TB or was it smallpox.. I forget shots at high school that leaves a wicked scar for many and hurt more than my Tetanus boosters into the glute). But that could just be like many shots into muscle, it aches, I shoot b12 myself into my thigh and it always feels like someone has given me a dead leg for a while.

And many people get flu like symptoms from the 2nd shot the next day.

So it seems fairly logical its a sign its doing something to the immune system.

TeaLeaf: Interesting stats coming from the NZ flu tracker (not the covid app).

Note that the latest report was for the week ending 22 August - only a few days after lockdown started.

(And as it's an "opt in" survey, I'd guess that the value is in trends rather than % figures which would be skewed).

But yeah, prior to 18 August, nobody seemed to give a damn about Covid risk.

It's Sep1

The 'adjusted from original rollout' planned date for the last of the age bands to book vaccine.

Everyone 12+ now can book.

Looks like Stuart Nash is going to lose a bet. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/covid-19-coronavirus-delta-outbreak-labour-mp-stuart-nash-bets-case-of-wine-on-90-per-cent-of-kiwis-being-vaccinated-by-christmas/S7WYCZ3QFH53SCMYUW3I24XPQY/

There's almost a week between "Christmas" (Herald headline) and "the end of the year" (in Herald article).

But yeah - risky to bet that <10% of the population aren't morons.

Well and the fact I'd be very surprised to see full approval and 2x jabs for 0-11yr olds here in NZ that soon so there is no way to get beyond 85% until that happens.

It shows how easily the seasonal flu or covid can hide or be skewed in covid daily numbers, makes them seem even less important. Obviously an extreme lowering over a longer period of time is more important.

I think there is a fair amount of "Stoic" behaviour, and sometimes fear, when it comes to visiting the GP in NZ. At least thats been my experience in life here.

My cousin was saying in China they do mandatory door to door testing, that must be hugely labour intensive.

I wonder if something like Saliva testing via courier could improve uptake here....? Obviously how the tests would have to be handled by fully vaccinated and proper testing attire by the courier (I mean to say, not just an every day NZ Courier Post type delivery/pickup)

The statistics being collected on Pfizer and Oxford vaccine full protection efficacy decline rates after the 2nd jab are pretty alarming. But I guess something like 40% death/hospitilisation protection and likely lower symptom impact is still better than catching it outright.

I saw that toddler that they cannot figure out where he caught it last night on TV (first time Ive watched live TV in 15 years lol) was a bit saddening. I think it is a total of 6 infants now in Auckland.

My largest empathy has always been for extreme elderly with no family/friends, but thinking about the very young contracting covid is equally heart breaking right now. I know with the spanish flu, young survivors, a lot had life long raspatory issues. I think that is due to how damaging it was to respitory tissue. Does Covid cause similar issues with blood being coughed/vommited, out the ears and nose etc? From what I have seen it does not appear to be as commonly graphic/extreme in the covid deaths, but perhaps I just havn't been watching enough images on the net.

My friend in NSW, she is in her mid 60s and she is one of the sorts who do not like the potential extreme side effects of the vaccine (ie death) and that it was in her opinion rushed (no steps were skipped in the process). I have given up encouraging her to get vaccinated. On the flip side my family in Germany are in their late 70s and have had both shots and are now not holding back on life in fear of break through covid. Im not sure which situation is more worrying.
