On Vaccine side effects.
Biology is a very slippery science.
The people that get significant side effects in trials and then are revealed to be in the placebo group for one.

Its not like something solid like Physics would have so much uncertainty  :-)

Everyone is different, some get less to none, but immune system is still doing its thing just as effectively.
Its like people who never seem to get a cold, but maybe they do and don't pay it any attention.

Main reason I think for discouraging the idea of a reaction being immune system doing its thing is...
Well the large number of people who will worry their shot failed if they don't feel anything.

YMMV , Yeh Biology

@TeaLeaf: The statistics being collected on Pfizer and Oxford vaccine full protection efficacy decline rates after the 2nd jab are pretty alarming.

Agree. The Mrs said the same thing to me, she being a Biologist I tend to lean on her advice when Im skeptical due to differing reactions like you mentioned. Not specifically Covid. But I was personally having back of the mind thoughts about whether I should do like the mid 60s friend I mentioned and wait a while to see a supposed longer term perspective on side effects of the vaccine. But how long is long enough, that imo will not be known for much longer than my friend seems to be focused on.

Is feeling crook etc after the 2nd jab an indicator that the vaccine is "better" than if you had no or very low side effects?

not necessarily. it just shows your immune system is cooking up a storm. it doesn't mean those without symptoms are not cooking up a storm as different people react to immune storms differently.

in terms of better - so you now have a high tech army vs a few guerrillas trying to enter and blow up death star.

if you set up a computer simulation of high tech army vs a few guerrillas, say 1000000 times the army will win, but 1 time the guerrilla will win and bye bye death star.

very similar.

@TeaLeaf - maybe this article would be a good starting point for you.

Then move onto this one. From the this second article: "Human trials of cancer vaccines using the same mRNA technology have been taking place since at least 2011. ‘If there was a real problem with the technology, we’d have seen it before now for sure,’ said Prof. Goldman."

Yep, without wanting to sound like a broken record, that is what the Lady told me when I asked, "is this vaccine safe given its not a traditional method of production".

To me it just seems, the reward far outweighs the risk.

Of course there is a chance things could go pear shaped, but life is one big risk mitigation strategy. Im sure crossing the road has fairly high negative side effects as well. :-)

Had my first jab some weeks ago.  Next day sore arm, headache, and no getup and go.   Had second one yesterday.  Sore arm but that was all .   None of the effects of the first one.

Was the pain similar to any other major injections you have had before?

It sounds to me like that dead leg type pain, the muscle is accepting a lot. A localised muscle ache etc.

Just shows the variance in initial side effects, which is why Im trying not to buy into any singular experience.

Hopefully we get a 3rd booster/variant relatively quickly like the Sinvac is claiming (2 months potentially is what I saw on youtube from them).

Coincidentally, I read this very chapter of Boy to my son on Monday! I guess the amount of artistic licence Dahl probably took with writing what is advertised as an autobiographical 'tales of childhood', it could be considered a fairy tale...

Just remember, though, Thwaites was the only one who didn't eat the liquorice. so the influence of the fake news over others wasn't that strong...

I'd forgotten that was autobiographical rather than a fairy tale. Loved reading Roald Dahl stories to our son too.

Classic material. What is your favourite? I could do with a good read given how long we are going to be in lockdown for up here. James and the Giant peach was a huge fav of mine as a child, it was very stimulating on the imagination youth have that we lose as we age (generalised). Dr DooLittle series was another that was extreme on the imagination at the time.

I presume the moral of the story you were suggesting is because of being similar to "he said she said"?
