Thinking back, though, I think it was an even more desultory scene than I painted initially: every few days I’d been slowly removing additional facial hair to produce some fantastically ugly results. That day was early in this ‘annoy my wife’ competition, so I think I also had full lamb chops and a handlebar moustache!

All I can say is at least it wasn’t a later variation, when all that was left had me resembling He Who Cannot Be Named On This Forum (and I don’t mean Voldemort). That said, my wife refused to let me leave the house with that, nor the thinner version that Mugabe sported...

While this may seem OT to this particular thread, the reality is this mucking about provided entertainment to the family in these weird times...

+1 for Crocs - my go to solution for quick walks to the bin, the gate, dry weather dog walks in the paddocks and so on.

My sense of sartorial self-respect won't permit me to wear them in public, just as I would never dream of wearing jandals, shorts, vests and some other things in public.

With the way things are right now I would agree. I'm optimistic that within 6 or so months it will be a different landscape. International travel may still not be as easy as it used to be but it will be doable.

I understand there are already antibody treatments available or coming available that can protect someone against the virus for a period of time, probably long enough to make a trip to the likes of the UK. Testing for being infected will become more common place and the tests will become faster and more accurate, even to the point they could be done at the point of departure/arrival.

Even without a vaccine these types of advances will make international travel more of a possibility than it is right now and remove or reduce any quarantine requirements.

Organisations supporting vulnerable groups have received a boost to provide additional mental health and wellbeing support with Health Minister David Clark today announcing $3.5 million in funding.

“In addition to the mental health and wellbeing support tools we launched recently for all Kiwis, extra support is being given to people who are vulnerable or more at risk. That boost has already made a significant difference,” David Clark said.

Support has been provided in a variety of ways including targeted information campaigns, online peer support, resources and help with staying connected.

One of the initiatives is the NZ Drug Foundation’s #bestbubble campaign which has reached hundreds of thousands of people with information on coping with life in their bubble, and dealing with the impacts of alcohol and drug use.

“I’ve been told that a lot of people are dealing with either unplanned withdrawal or they have chosen this period to give up drinking or drugs. The NZ Drug Foundation has been providing really important information to these people on how to manage what they are experiencing in a safe way.

“Additional support has been in place for people living with mental health or addiction issues, and whānau supporting them, by providing funding for online support for groups, webinars and multilingual services.

Changing Minds, an organisation that supports people living with mental health conditions, have launched wellbeing sessions via video conferencing.

“Over 100 people have attended these online sessions in the past couple of week and I’ve heard they’ve enjoyed a different way of engaging with others.

“Funding has also gone towards boosting support for deaf, Rainbow and Asian communities who can feel particularly isolated and are less likely to reach out for help.

“The funding for the Rainbow support service, OUTLine, has meant they were able to transform their peer support phone service to a remote operation and promote it more widely. I understand the service has seen an increase in first-time and younger callers under 25 during this time. The funding has also meant that the specialist counselling service has been more accessible to people who have felt the pressure of the lockdown restrictions through social isolation and unemployment.

The Health Promotion Agency has also launched mental wellbeing information campaigns and resources targeted specifically for Māori, Pacific peoples, people with underlying health conditions, older New Zealanders, pregnant women and new mothers.

“In addition, the Cancer Society has received funding to help them reach out to people with compromised immunity.

“These initiatives build on those announced over the past few weeks, providing information, tools and resources to help all New Zealanders maintain their mental wellbeing during these difficult times,” David Clark said.

Sorry to hear that, it is a tough situation to be in. I am in a similar situation as a lot of my family are over the and have elderly family members who I may never see in the flesh again due to this. Based on the number of infections in the UK, and they must have a huge amount that aren't recorded as confirmed, I do wonder why they have left it until now to do quarantining.

Thanks; Yes we do. Of course, it only goes so far. I last saw my mother in person at a wedding in March last year. I am more used to the separation because I went to boarding school at the age of seven and a half, so I was away from home for at least 36 weeks a year pretty much forever thereafter. The Memsahib is not so used to it, although she is not in her mother's pocket, as it were.

She finds it harder, especially given that her mother has had a variety of health issues in recent years, several of which have the potential to be very serious. My MiL is fortunate in that my BiL lives within 6km or so of her so he is able to do shopping etc. I (occasionally!) feel sorry for my mother, as out of 4 sons, only one remains in the same country as her!

I'm sure we are by no means the worst off in this sort of scenario and as noted above by @Technofreak hopefully various developments will happen that facilitate being able to travel. At least social distancing will mean more space on planes even in Economy!

We're in a fairly similar position. We went home in July last year and were planning to go for Christmas this year. Given the current situation we don't plan on doing that now - 4 weeks quarantine would be impossible to manage. It'll be around 2 years at best between my mother and MIL seeing our kids. When they are 6 and 8 that is a fair chunk of their lives.

It is what it is, we just have to get on with it really.

I awoke in a cold sweat last night having nightmares about being tested for COVID-19 (i.e. swab up nose).

For context, I am acutely needle-phobic and it would appear that the old swab up the nose into the brain cavity thing is similar to my subconscious.

This will be yet another day where I survive on a broken night's sleep and berocca and coffee.

I think it may be the idea of getting back into the office and all that jazz under level 2 (even if it's only a couple of days a week) that has started this...the prospect of public transport/people/new bubbles and everything that goes with it playing on my mind resulting in a fantasy world of having to be tested and if I refuse, having to have a blood test (for which I am normally sedated).

It's all a nonsense, I know, but there you go...mental health and all that
