Masks and social distancing could kill any version of the virus. Just too many rule-breakers out there.

At least someone else understands the human factor over the medical / need for enforcement factor with me :)

Dont you mean the only city?

Im in ChCh all good, we already have MIQ here

No, I'm saying that it's unreasonable for everyone to just demand MIQ facilities be somewhere else - and as you point out Chch has already got a few of them.

Places like Rotorua/Queenstown seem totally opposed to any of them, but also seem to be the ones crying out for more and more government support due to restricted travel.

Some seem to think they should all just be in Auckland and that locking down our biggest city repeatedly is somehow a no-cost option.

Yeah there was one proposed a good while back, away from cities, somewhat rural, that was a no-no from locals. I dont think anyone thinks they should all be up there, they are spread around, but not that equitably, AKL does more heavy lifting than it should. I guess thats due to arrival numbers?

Heaven forbid the rest of the country carry a bit more of the MIQ facility load, rather than just loading more and more risk onto our largest city.

ummm Poneke has serveral, Rotorua has sever as a couple of examples.

One of the Wellington ones is being closed because its ventilation is rubbish and not economic to upgrade.. that will leave just one in Wgtn...the CHCH addition is basically a replacement

There will be no "normal" as it was in 2019 ever again. The new normal for the medium term will be Level. If we were to be able to exit level 1 in the long term the new normal will include wearing masks when ever away from home, hybrid working and hybrid recreation. Aotearoa will need more hospitals spread out to the regions and smaller town.

The plan is enough restriction and vaccination to not overwhelm hospitals. More hospitals is not an option as it cannot happen (quickly) Infrastrcture, the builds, import staff, train staff, thats a project for another decade.

More vaccinations = lower but still restrictions, based on 98+% of infected vaccinated people dont need hospital level care. If that grow, increase restrictions.

This is what is coming out Rotorua when a new one is proposed:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/452023/we-ve-drawn-a-line-rotorua-rails-against-any-extra-miq-hotels

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick has said three was enough, as has the local Chamber of Commerce. They said it would take up space for the tourism industry, particularly when several other motels were being used for emergency housing.

The Lakes District Health Board has also said any extra facilities in the city would be a strain on its resources.

Māori Party co-leader and MP for Waiariki Rawiri Waititi said the region was being exploited.

As an Aucklander living under level three lockdown so other parts of the country can just get on with their lives, I have precisely zero sympathy for them.

We need more hospitals now, Covid has only added to that need.

And for this weeks changes (I've forgotten to keep up so these are only the recent ones)

Kayak fishing clarified in Sporting

The 50 limits removed and 100 limits left for activities.

Alert level 2/3/4 pages - Lots of pretty images added. And book your vaccine changed to 'Get your vaccine' (in light of walk-ins now available almost everywhere I guess)

Some clear-ups in lvl3 business around what trade can enter your home (excluding out cleaners to be support only)

Home cleaners can only work to provide support to vulnerable people — for example, disabled people or people with health conditions.

oh please , what do you want  a big parade and a medal for your sacrifice. We have 3 big hotels for MIQ and for a population of only 55,000 that is more than enough.

MIQ Hotels, part of the problem is only a low % of hotels can have ventilation or can upgrade ventilation to be suitable.
So ignoring a suitable hotel in one part of the country causes a bigger problem than it might seem.

We may not have any other hotel in Auckland that could meet requirements I expect.
Please can we raise ventilation standards for any new builds.

Hotel ventilation, sigh.. you really are breathing other peoples Farts, Particulates and Fecal Plumes ?
Maybe all those things you thought you caught on the flight was actually in the Hotel.

Wow.

What is the financial impact to NZ if Rotorua goes into a L4/L3 lockdown, vs Auckland?

Oh great, management of existing MIQ properties has been stellar so far, what could possibly go wrong breaching the borders of fortress South Island?

Sure. Let's have Covid pop up anywhere at all. Awesome.

The sooner we start on improved infrastructure, the sooner it's available. No reason to delay.
