Batman:

watching the news -

John Key says take away the freedom of the unvaccinated because they are holding the rest hostage

It's worth noting that last month the PM was strongly against restrictions for the unvaccinated. Yesterday she come saying she's now in favour of these and said said they're likely to happen here.

Fully agree with @tdgeek re matter for different thread/forum.

I suspect that the longer the covid alert levels stay in place, the greater probability that politics will creep in. I’m thankful that the conversation has remained civil and hope that it remains that way. Extremely polarised discourse like we see in other countries hasn’t helped with finding solutions and only helped push people further apart.

heavenlywild: Public mood to me seems to be changing. I'm not saying the govt has lost support but I sense the tide is slowly changing towards the "what is the plan?" direction.

No doubt borders will open early next year no matter what because the govt will be under pressure to considering Aussies are doing so by Dec.

Hermit kingdom is a great description of us right now. We are not making the most of the advantage we've had.

Hermit kingdom is stupid.

18 cases 2 unlinked. this is likely the end result of delta level 4 for 6 weeks. 10-20 a day

Possibly the more important number is 50% of yesterday's cases had exposure events/were infectious in the community. Unless that number comes does to zero or near zero it's unlikely this will die out

Agree, for whatever age/culture/social reason there is, many are not complying. At school, you would get detention, at a job you might get fired, but with Covid, you just spread it, and probably later whine about the lockdowns.

No.  It's an incredibly shallow and selfish view, and shows he has no real understanding of the social and medical issues.

For starters, "living with the virus" is going to mean condemning a significant number of the vulnerable in our population to live in isolation - not much better than prison.  Otherwise the truth is far from "living with the virus" - but condemning the vulnerable to be "dying with the virus".

Again, only if you're coming at it by mischaracterising his argument as opening up before vaccination rates improve dramatically.

Honestly the aggressive personal responses and calling people delusional is getting a bit much for the thread, especially considering you seem to pretty quickly tell others to go to the 'politicisation of the response' one. Maybe you should consider taking your own advice.

You have a wee one (and congrats on that) I think you had concerns over contact with support people. Not sure if you meant that for your family or in general. How would living with the pandemic work for you? If you and your partner are vaccinated, lets go to level 0?

I wouldn't be surprised to see them going up a level if cases rise. But they need to do far more testing, only 4500 yesterday in Auckland,.. Considering the PM said Level 3 is supposed to be very similar to level 4, and people should stay at home unless you are going to work, the amount of traffic and things open while in level 3 almost looks like level 2. Almost seems Auckland has gone into a level 2.5.

Agree. But you cannot make people test. These people have been told. They aren't testing. And some are intermingling. The pity is most of Auckland is doing the right thing but too many arent. But unlike AUS, we wont criticise that, but we need too.

The thing is that there is no other country that NZ could use as a better example, than what we have done. I remember when some in the media were using Australia as the poster child of how to manage it, and were also the ones pushing for that transtasman bubble, even though they have double the ICU capacity of NZ, so could live with covid better. They seem to have backed off that one since the outbreaks.

There are a few poster childs. Most seem to have fallen by the wayside. Maybe NZ will be a poster child?? Maybe we will, but that wont mean being a hermit nation, nor will be accepting that deaths are fine.

So what you’re saying here is that you would prefer large numbers of the population to be kept prisoners in their homes and in isolation, which is happening now with alert level 3 and 4. To prevent the small number of people ineligible or anti-vax from getting sick?

You would prefer the government to borrow $1 billion a week to keep the vast majority of businesses and people employed, because they are kept prisoners in their own homes to protect the small number of ineligible and anti-vax people?

We are getting close to the point where the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

You mean deaths are worth it?

I hear of this borrowing, and the interest we will pay. But I also hear of QE, which is printing money that adds to inflation

So are we borrowing 1B per week at an interest rate? Or are we adding to the M1/M2/M3 money supply and aggravating inflation?

What do we make of today's 18 cases? Presumably that will drop off tomorrow off the back of lower Sunday testing, but it's hard to feel super optimistic this is heading in any firm direction.

Starting to get concerned that the longer this goes on, the more likely it is to get a foothold in the no test, no jab bits of our community who will also likely be pretty lax about lockdown rules.

It bothers me. MOST of AKL are complant. Thats why its not in every second street. 1.7M people, and the cases are magnitudes less than insignificant. But if some people feed this virus, expect 15 to 20 every week, at the expense of probably 1.68 M

Oblivian: Keep in mind we were warned of 50-60 cases to be expected from this not really admitting but are known about mixed groups during mid week.

This is inline (would explain all the known isolating), but potentially more regardless of testing numbers as some of them are obviously on a set schedule too.

Yep, the x cases that each have a family they are infecting.

Is that worth noting? This virus has no playbook, if you cant change your mind as you are too invested in politics instead of the public and changing dynamic, thats a issue in itself.

Buying time, adds time, we can react to the latest news instead of being pro-active with Covid which is gambling.

Are we likely to see some sort of localised lockdown in Auckland?

I say this for two reasons. This tail is going to drag on and on as it appears that some areas are not playing the game and two it seams to be crazy keeping the whole of Auckland locked down when Covid is fairly well confined to some areas.

I know there are logistical issues with managing a local lock down but I pretty sure they did it in Melbourne.

your guess is as good as mine

options include

- compulsory testing before doing certain things

- restrict movement if not vaccinated

- lockdown

- ? other

i think they would consider these esp if cases go up the urgency might go up

Yes it is worth noting in light of it being something John Key called for (hence the original quote) - so many people were quick to jump on the bandwagon today and trash everything he said, yet some of the things he said were very much aligned with our current govt strategy.
