only took the test because NSW guidelines suggested he should because he had travelled from France.

AFAIK still completely asymptomatic.

This is the problem. How many other cases like this, where the person is a carrier but shows no symptoms. Apparently according to the Minstry of Health, the risk of catching it from someone asymptomatic is low, but don't think there has been any research into this, for this particular virus.

Also I see the MOH are now using some new standard for identifying which people on the plane are most at risk from a carrier. Apparently it is a new 'european' standard...

Does NZ only test people who are showing symptoms, and have some connection to recent overseas travel?

Kim Hill’s interview with a virologist on Saturday (and the same a couple of weeks prior) is worth listening to anyway, but in particular in relation to a theory discussed re the negligible impact on children, based on research into dengue fever.

That's it. I think most borders into most island are also closed. What we seem to need.

Half of Europe in crisis the other half just ignore it, and the tourists from Europe to NZ are not going to self isolate.

The key word is Self. Self won't happen. Unless you're German or Singaporean, it ain't gonna fly.

By the time you have scientific evidence to show it didn't work, well ...

I read that in Italy they have converted normal wards into ICU (not good) and many doctors are patients in ICU.

There is a a bit of the Health act that gives substantial powers to a "medical officer of health" and set out related penalties (imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, a fine not exceeding $4,000, or both).

NZ was described as a gateway to the pacific.

I think it is expected (or already agreed diplomatically) that each of the pacific nation will stop allowing flights from countries other than NZ, hence assuring that they are safer (or as safe) as NZ in terms of infection. NZ is currently a lot less risky than other flight destinations like the USA and Australia. This risk is further lowered by the departure screening & restrictions NZ has promised.

At least one pacific nation announced such restrictions today.

Fine up to $4000 is a joke these days IMO, when they may have paid significantly more than that for the trip and all accommodation. Legislation doesn't seem to keep up with inflation.

Whilst you might expect backpacker-style tourists to be nearly broke, (a) many tourists have a great deal more money, and (b) backpackers have parents who would perhaps stump up to get their child out of jail.

And the fear of punishment will encourage compliance.

Fine up to $4000 is a joke these days IMO, when they may have paid significantly more than that for the trip and all accommodation. Legislation doesn't seem to keep up with inflation.

Having done a couple of trips that cost north of $15K, I can tell you that I sure as hell wouldn't want to add $4K to that. I expect the number of tourists who would shrug off a $4K fine would be very small. And, for them, there's the threat of prison.

But I agree... bump the fine up to $10K at least. Not just because of inflation, but to reflect the seriousness of the crime. One "super spreader" could kill dozens or hundreds of people. In South Korea, church leaders who concealed congregation member names were threatened with murder prosecutions.
