Whilst you might expect backpacker-style tourists to be nearly broke, (a) many tourists have a great deal more money, and (b) backpackers have parents who would perhaps stump up to get their child out of jail.

And the fear of punishment will encourage compliance.

i still don't think it will control virus transmission. my opinion.

Agree, backpackers are a free spirit. Any tourist that comes here is a threat now as now, there is no point coming here. Given that there is no reason for a tourist to come here it seems an easy fix to block the borders except for Kiwis. As you are not blocking a revenue stream

Canada as well as Malaysia are to block non citizens from entry, EU wants to do the same. Thats the next stage globally, every country will enact that shortly. Then they can all focus on the country not incomings

Considering we've struggled getting past the 'Welcome to New Zealand, please don't crap in the bush or else we'll be forced to ask you very nicely not to crap in the bush again' point with freedom campers, holding backpackers to account is not one of our strong points.

Given they move like gypsies its probbaly not easy to control them. I can't believe how blatant they are telling reporters they wont comply. The latest global move is a full border block, we need to do that now, remove the airport from the equation

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

We have been less reactive and slightly more pro active than others. And we are blessed with low numbers arriving here. Clearly from what we have seen we need to fully block the borders, and with what known cases we have, and what will be relatively low numbers of unknown cases. we would be well placed. Low unknown cases? Since case 1, there has been ample time for community transmission cases to hit the ED's/doctors, so it should be low IMHO

due to virus spread, decisions made today will only reveal results in 15 days.

if in 2 weeks we find self isolation didn't work (non compliance) we are stuffed.

The UK herd immunity thing sounds like PR spin from a consultant. There is no evidence that this is an official UK policy recommended by anyone at all that I can see.

5.5 days is the median

Covid-19 started in late November

Official 31 December

We blocked China around January 26

There has been ample time for mass community transmission. Self isolation didnt commence 15 days ago

Canada blocking all except: Canadian Residents, Citizens, US Citizens..
Incoming flights can land at only 4 designated international airports.

Keeping the border open to the US is kind of unavoidable (Canadian 'snowbirds' from the US & Mexico are pouring back across the border now) but the weak point in the plan.

I've talked with multiple people I know in the US over the last couple of days.
COVID-19 testing there's a disaster. Two of them are pretty sure they've got it, and can't get tested.

One who did get tested - she's been overseas in Europe, shows symptoms, and is covered by insurance - only got as far as the biofire screening (for 26 most common flus and infections), tested positive there, and was refused the COVID-19 test..
