The biggest irony in all the protests is that they would have more freedom if they were vaccinated.

It really seems illogical. Vaccination of other things has been mandatory in some schools for a long time, but how many were protesting against that. The socially right thing to do is get vaccinated during a pandemic, to not do so is selfish IMO unless someone has a valid exemption. The UK appears to be having more restrictions over xmas, yet if they had more people vaccinated they probably wouldn't need them.

One to be argued in court, to get clarification of the overlap between the pov you put forward, the potential overreach, versus, the intent of the councils powers under the civil defence act to protect the safety of local citizens and to frame an emergency in a local context *which is entirely relevant in a poorly resourced region with low vaccine ratres....and known Govt response admissions that areas of our society will be impacted more severely than others.

Excluding people from a certain area of the country and not others is a stretch. We're not leppers. And given we're fully compliant with all relevant health orders if we're double-vaxxed while travelling, invoking the CD Act (presumably involving declaring a state of emergency) to exclude Aucklanders but not others is... well... yea. It's a hard sell from a 'team of five million' stand point to start with.

E: Sending out an emergency alert saying "Warning: Aucklanders Nearby" is a giggle, I'll give you that much, but like I say, I'd find it hard to believe that Councils advocating for excluding certain New Zealanders from their regions aren't going beyond the scope of their powers.

Oh sure, the thing that is being lost here, is that they are not picking on Aucklanders. They do not want people traveling from anywhere into their region until vaccine rates are higher.

Auckland is just used as the obvious target since it is the national epicenter of the pandemic. People say Auclklanders out of convenience, what is really meant is exclusion from all of us.

Although as of yet there has been no equivalent rise in Hospitalisations or ICU numbers,
https://covidlive.com.au/report/daily-hospitalised/nsw

NSW is highly vaccinated 94% single and 92% double dosed...

It will be very interesting watching what their Omicron Cluster does in a such a highly vaxxed population...

Yeah I have been seeing this and wondering what is going on there. The cause is likely multiple reasons. People tend to focus on the obvious. However there are a myriad of reasons I won't bore people with...chiefly among them is Covids wave pattern which no one understands in a consistent way across the board.

We are at that window now between shot two and shot three. Kids are a big part of it etc etc oops I said I wasn't going to go into it.

according to Pfizer, double dose is not protective, triple dose is good protection.

whatever that means.

the important thing is, as usual, hospitalization and death

I noticed that in West Auckland with the traffic light system not a lot seems to have changed in the cafe scene since L3, even though compliance with scanning - both at door and by hospitaity staff, and with mask wearing is high (assuming all bike riders are mask exempt )😗

But even though the cafes were doing everything right, with scanning and 92% of the population double vaccinated, the cafes I have visited still seemed extremely quiet compared to normal, very few diners. And needing extra staff to do all the customer checking.

I wonder how many will not survive. There does not seem to be the same bounce back  or feeling of confidence as after the last lockdown.

It a big Yes.. .But, ..

from the early study you note , you will likely catch it, but you probably won't die from it...

"This data would predict that individuals who have received two vaccines will most likely not have a significant prevention against infection or any type of disease,”

However

"Even two vaccine doses may still prevent the variant from killing people. That’s because vaccines create immunity not only via antibodies but also through long-lived memory cells, including T cells. Omicron’s mutations, for the most part, do not fall in areas targeted by the T cells that BioNTech has studied.

Because of that, Şahin says, two doses of Pfizer may still prevent serious disease, although it will take one or two months of data to know for sure

A bit early to see any significant movement on those counts yet.

But yes, will be interesting to see how Omicron trends there.

I was a bit surprised by PBTech's stance when I went to their Glenfield store yesterday.  Full checking of vaccine pass before getting through the door, but then it's only access to a click and collect area anyway although you can tell a teller what you want and they would then presumably supply it.  Seems odd given that most shops are open as usual even without vaccine pass checking.  Luckily Noel Leeming was open as normal so they got to sell me a monitor instead.

Dr Bryan Betty of the Royal NZ college of medical practitioners describes our number of antivaxx Gps as small "Less than thirty".

I am stunned we are talking more than a half dozen here.

We only know about a small handful, one in CH CH two in Whangarei, one in Murupara and one on Waiheke Island.

Approaching thirty equates to a massive platform for vaccine misinformation. This is on the head of the medical council, it is time for them to stop being an old boys network, a protectorate, to doing their jobs as a monitoring and disciplinary body.

The Nursing Council of New Zealand would have you hauled before the council before you can say pro choice.

I thought Chch was a husband and wife pair of doctors.

There's also the Kapiti doctor who used his work's email list to send out anti-vax material.

I dunno if the husband of the Chch medical couple is practicing medicine locally, someone will know. All I know is they have been Christian missionary's and from the wife's admission their antivaxxing stance is because it is against their faith.

Seems consistent with their former nationality and what we see especially in the Southern US.
