For some reason, no decision to loosen restrictions that the government takes can be implemented without a 1-2 week wait period.  It makes no sense to me, just seems like promising kids nice things in the future to make them behave better today.  AKL clearly fits the criteria for Amber now, so the 17-day delay is perplexing.  I guess it can be justified to some extent by the threat of Omicron

I thought it was based on assessing the flow on effect of freedom day?

It seems like that because that's what it is!

I guess your question is why isn't the lower SI going to green? Because there's no doubt that Auckland fits the criteria for going to orange. The day that we entered the traffic light system at red we met the criteria for orange.

But yes, the lower SI also meets the criteria for green I have no doubt about that.

Give it four weeks, and the whole country (maybe except Northland) will fit the criteria for Orange.

There are a few thousand 'active' cases in Auckland. Do you honestly think they'll all do the right thing and stay isolated (there maybe a few hundred carrying it that have no idea they've got it)? Covid is coming to the south. It'll go to a festival and a packed bar at New Years, but because the country is in Orange, everyone in that bar, or at that festival, will be vaccinated. This reduces the risk of super-spreading. Hence, why the South Island remains at Orange.

It's not that big a deal, the difference between them is basically mask-wearing, and vaccine passports, both of which aren't that hard.

So green is unattainable unless the virus dies out.

What's the point in having it?

But the perception of the difference is what matters, what people perceive, they believe. At green, the perception is that you are free to go about your daily business as you see fit, at Orange or Red, you are being told there are conditions to your daily movement (even if as you point out the conditions aren't onerous).

As it stands, the Govt have announced certain criteria, which they are now ignoring "for caution". They use whatever measures suit them on the day to justify their decisions (including if the health advice suits or doesn't support their decision, if the 90% was a hard or soft measure among others).

Hopefully calmness and common sense can prevail over this period and people just get on with things. Getting all bent out of shape over something you can't control doesn't seem a good way to spend the holidays...

"I became emotional" yes, okay, right, whatever. So are lots of other people at the moment, but you don't see them going online making tough guy threats, either.

Then they should have made the decision 2 weeks earlier to tie in with the exodus.

It makes no sense you can go everywhere around the country but you can't go next door or down the road.

I think as @MikeB4 said, this is what we don't want, a I vs you mentality.

These guys are stressed as hell because they 100% believe the vaccine with absolutely alter their body and turn them into some crocodile or something.

It's like you don't want to tease someone with a mental illness, even though they are violent etc.

I think when a doctor and nurse display these sort of mentally unsound behaviours and make mentally unsound decisions, you have the medical council and nursing council who will deal to them. So I will support the decisions of these 2 councils whatever they may be.

I'm just very happy that the people who run the country are mentally sound.
