I don't think this is conspiracy theory, though it's affirming some of the thoughts from people very skeptical about the response from Chinese authorities.

Article in NY Times:

Last month, the government put Wuhan in a virtual lockdown, sealing off the city and banning most public transportation and private cars from its streets in a desperate effort to contain the outbreak. Now, many residents say it is nearly impossible to get the health care they need to treat — or even diagnose — the coronavirus.

Expressing exasperation, doctors say there is a shortage of testing kits and other medical supplies, and it is not clear why more are not available. The ban on transportation means some residents have to walk for hours to get to hospitals — if they are well enough to make the journey. Layers of bureaucracy stand between residents and help. And the long lines outside hospitals for testing and treatment suggest that the outbreak is spreading far beyond the official count of cases.

Yep, Getting hard stats out of China is difficult on a good day let alone now. The lockdown is almost an acceptance that it's best to just let it burn out no matter the death toll. To be fair to China here tho a new illness starting out in a major population center in the west wouldn't likely to be any better, Most primary healthcare systems in any country doesn't have surge capacity to handle the walking well and a big increase in ICU demands

CSN617 (CHC direct) landed, but has remained APU enabled/transmitting ADSB

Likely either departing early (normally 1030pm) or have the aircon on and have been pre-boarded before even offloading. Sending them back.

Word has it they are dropping back and or suspending until end march

This only really starts around the 22nd of February, when the worldwide travelling Chinese have returned from their New Year holidays and 14 days of incubation have passed.

Fred99:
Here's a Qantas 747 charter flight, evacuating Aus (& some NZ?) citizens from Wuhan to Learmonth Airport  (never heard of it) in WA, then I presume the Aussies get shuffled to Christmas Island.

Wait - I smell a conspiracy theory brewing - if it's heading to WA, then they appear to be lost.  It seems to be headed to Sydney.

Well that was a weird route - considering the direct route was almost due south:

Link to story

There are a lot of children and elderly passengers onboard. We needed to get them out of Wuhan."

After the flight, the aircraft will return to Sydney for two to three days of "deep cleaning" by a specialist team.

"Even the cushions of every seat are taken off and cleaned, so it's quite extensive and we believe more than meets the needs to make sure the aircraft is safe going forward," Mr Joyce said.

Looks that way - but kind of an extreme precaution I'd have thought.  Wonder if they were flying a yellow flag.

They still went over Indonesia. I wonder whether it was to avoid bad weather?

Looks like there was remarkably stable weather and little wind, once they were S of Hong Kong there was almost no jetstream wind either - <10 knots the whole way.  It's as if the flight path might have been to avoid flying over land (I think as I adjust the perforated metal pasta strainer on my head - that only shines like tinfoil)

  • China Eastern MU779, Shanghai - Auckland, ETA 4:25pm

  • China Southern CZ305, Guangzhou - Auckland, ETA 4:22pm

  • China Southern CZ617, Guangzhou - Christchurch, ETA 5:01pm

Checked MU 779 and estimated arrival 4.04pm so going to arrive early.

Maybe travel ban only applies to Air New Zealand?

Nope.  Maybe those airlines are happier to fly empty planes (OTOH, there could be quite a few NZ nationals keen to get home ASAP, happier to face 14 days of self-quarantine than risk being stuck)

As I understand it the restriction applies to passenger arrivals only. Presumably freight is still booked and unloaded. That being the case presumably there is an updated protocol for pilot refresh and compliance with max flight time etc. That could mean planes are on the tarmac longer while pilots rest if they are over flight time and not carrying a spare set. /All speculation on my part.

Entry ban but flights still coming. That's going to cause some chaos I imagine?

I believe it's still open to NZ citizens and immediate family members (except from Wuhan)

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.
