Good to have experts here to reassure us all.

never said i was an expert , i was just looking at the numbers , 200,000 masks to look after 7 people should be enough for the moment

Except anyone showing symptoms should probably be treated by someone with suitable PPE, not just the 7 people who are in a bad shape and need hospitalisation.

when are the world leaders going to unite and tackle this global problem using a single vehicle, only then the world can move forwards.

it probably start with the scientists who are probably using all their firepower on the covid, but the govts also need to talk to each other instead of doing their own thing. not just rich nations with rich nations. every nation included.

Congratulations.  You win a prize for most pessimistic post of the day so far.

There are only 7 people under treatment for Covid-19 in hospital in NZ - or at least that was the case when MoH reported yesterday.

I dont think any have hit the ICU's so far? We are tippy toeing around the perimeter, out of harms way so far. The next four weeks and the passengers large drop off will be a big barrier for the virus to navigate.

saw this news the other day, I guess when your country in trouble & need a lot of gloves for your medical staff, you just lift the ban & ask for help.

Now the winner is the owner of the glove maker, why should I suddenly help you now?

Facebook is a cesspool. I've been considering exiting for a while. It's just a pain in the posterior as it's a very efficient way to share stuff with people when you live overseas.

I agree with you completely💯

Try going without Facebook when you have every kid's sports club coordinating things through it. It's unfeasible to give it up, unfortunately.

With the Mad Butcher now having to shut down govt should buy up all the meat for distribution to those that need it in this time of isolation.

DS248: As per the trends in my chart update yesterday (#2447381), based on https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ USA now has most confirmed cases in the world (& still the 26th there so total to 26 March will rise a bit more).  ...

Italy will exceed the Chinese total tomorrow, and also Spain a few days later.

German total is also up there but in that case is in part due their test regime.  Not just that it has been a bit more extensive than Spain and Italy but it has apparently been more thorough at contact tracing & hence picked up a higher proportion of cases (https://www.livescience.com/germany-coronavirus-deaths-so-low.html).

The DHBs are setting up off (main hospital) site assessment / testing centres.  Some people should consider zipping it - rather than constantly criticizing the response. Imagine if you were a health worker at the coal face - and were reading posts from supposed colleagues in forums about how you were being let down and that the world was ending.

Well, have those figures been released?

We have/had over 200 cases .. we'd expect 20% of those would be in hospital but they're not.

Are we getting less virulent strains of the SARS-CoV-2 hitting our shores?

ICU figures? No idea. Ive watched almost all the daily updates, cannot recall any ICU use. The 7 that we have now are stable

Im not a medico, but there has been a number of older people here in our cases. It hasnt so far caused any serious issues. Wuhan was serious but then again ther are other reasons why the fatality rate was higher, but if we feel that in NZ its been milder, maybe it is possible that over time it weakens, or it slightly mutates and weakens for that reason. Maybe the "original" virus is better than generations down version?

Didn't realise they didn't need access to PPE. Not sure I'm criticizing, just pointing out we need PPE for more than the staff working with the 7 people in hospital.

SO ... more debacle

This is what the NZ govt sent to all the embassies (who have all posted on their FB page)

After midnight Friday 27 March domestic travel will only be permitted for the transport of people undertaking essential services and the transport of freight. Non-essential service travellers will not be permitted to take domestic flights to connect with international flights after this time. Public transport is only available for those working in essential services, and for medical reasons.

This is what Air NZ says

We are advised by Air NZ  that travel to connect to our flight home is deemed "essential," so this advice does not apply.

One of them is wrong.

And people are suicidal.

Is anybody here able to help? Or know someone who is able to clarify?

I wasn't referring to you - sorry about that.

Yes - I'm sure we need as much PPE as we can get.  Keep suspected Covid-19 patients away from the main hospital sites, then you reduce total PPE needs.

One could look at SARS outbreak in Toronto and see the consequence of not being prepared, and then the consequence of scaremongering (mass walkouts by panicking medical staff).   It was stupid.  Fortunately in a way that it was so stupid and deadly that a lesson could be learned.
