tdgeek: Low wage earners probably wont be returning from overseas trips.

Yes, but they are Uber drivers.

The coronavirus patient in London showed up at the hospital in an Uber, and health officials say it's a sign people aren't following advice to contain the virus

Scott3:

How do you even get home from the airport without contacting other people? (assuming you don't have a car in the carpark, or are able to arrange somebody to drop a car off in the airport carpark with keys planted or in a lockbox...) Taxi? Bus? Go to the rental car desk?

Even assuming that all the logistics of self quarantine can be resolved, I would still expect around 20%+ of the population to not comply.

Yep, and at the end of the day, its free reign for that or any other virus, and as recent posts here confirm, we don't provide or have any intervention. Which was my initial point, also now confirmed.

IMO It is really stupid how the government seems to expect people actually know how to self quarantine, for something as important as this, and is relying on people to know what they should do, and to actually stick with it. We have huge regulation and costs associated with producing safe food in NZ, much of which is just common sense. Same with worksafe, just because we have laws in place, doesn't mean that people will follow them. Maybe it reduces the occurrence, but for something like this, which is supposed to stop the spread of a relatively contagious disease that has quite a high mortality rate, IMO we are putting too much faith in people doing the right thing, or knowing what the right thing to do is.

"Happily" the pilots are now responsible to watch their passengers for symptoms.

The pilots? Or cabin crew? Because surely the pilots will not even see most of their passengers.

And putting this responsibility on people untrained in medicine seems like a bureaucracy looking for a cheap solution (No expensive trained clinicians needed! No delays in processing!) including a scapegoat if it all goes wrong. "We did our best, but the pilots failed in their responsibility".

The pilot in command - since he/she is the responsible person onboard having the transferred governmental rights/force of the relevant state of the registered A/C AFTER closing and BEFORE opening the A/C's doors. And by the way, there is a CVMS in many A/Cs. ;-)

That's my issue exactly. I dont favour AOS marching everyone off to quarantine camps, but I also don't favour a casual she'll be right attitude. Will it get here? Probably not, but it could as it has in many other countries, and we have a multi cultural environment, and those from China, are a welcome and also populous addition.

It can be treated as a BIG DEAL without becoming a drama. Just reinforce what could happen.

I'd be more concerned that official guidance is still "So, to keep you and others safe, you should isolate yourself from other people for 14 days from the time you left or transited through mainland China, or were exposed to COVID-19."

We have person to person transmission outside of China and confirmed infections in 25 countries with double digit cases in 10 of them

You've lost me a wee bit. I 100% agree with what you say. if the virus was an easy blood test, and not asymptomatic, we can add in some inconvenience at the border to guarantee we are free of it. But it's not.

We have person to person transmission outside of China

If the Wuhan (Hankou area) wet meat market was the culprit, that will have had a number of customers. But with 60,000 cases you'd have to say 99% of that is person to person transmission? 60000 minus meat market buyers that caught it

As I've tried to say, the advice to self quarantine is correct, just not the emphasis on how badly we need to do that. Yes, the economy would suffer, but it already is with tourism, and exports stopped in some areas. That hurts. If a few people were off work for two weeks (sick paid anyway, or Govt top up) thats no biggie.

Having said all this, it probably wont get here. But if it did, and spread (asymptionatic, supermarket shopping, the mall, KFC, etc) there is potential for it to be big here, even if the numbers aren't. More economic loss, more xenophobia, and so on

My bad, Main point is we should be advising self quarantine for more than just people who transited China now that the Virus is in 25 other countries yet the official advise is "If you left or transited China" only
