I am appalled by the f-wits who try to flee the police. This is bad on every level, but I think it is also a reflection of declining respect for authority. I wish someone in some ministry somewhere would just say what the hell and authorise a gory campaign with lots of mangled wrecks and the following slogan: If you run, we will pursue you until you die!

Maybe that would penetrate a few thick skulls out there.

Those defiant pastors and their (presumably) Republican congregations may well end up providing an excellent demonstration of how evolution trumps creationism as they are manifestly unfit to survive in the real world.

Fleeing the police is wrong, but it should be balanced with whether pursuit is in the public interest vs safety. The issue being that a car fleeing police will probably be moving much faster and less predictably than otherwise, this puts everyone else in danger too.

My opinion on this has changed significantly over the past 10 years.

I am aware of that. They may not be able to completely change their policy. But they can certainly change their message. It is only the f-wits they are trying to reach.

Fewer cases today, but half the number of tests being run yesterday as there was on Thursday

You mean the ones who don't give a toss and likely wouldn't pay any attention?

Pursuit encourages fleeing, it's a base instinct. It's not logical and it can be overwhelming (At which point the chances you'll recall a gory tv campaign is low). Was the crime committed worth someone dying today?

The person who flees is at fault, I am not suggesting anything different, but it could have been so much worse, someone unrelated to this, could have ended up hurt. If they had this persons license plate (assuming not stolen) they eventually could have caught up with that person later.

It's not a very simple thing, but there is a balance to be struck.

It's off-topic and the last thing I'll say about it.

Masks , it is a bit of an endless debate.

I got a bit of a serve from SWMBO that my skills as a provider were somewhat lacking
Looking at our pitiful non brand name anemic mask collection. Focused on simple DIY protection.
Some harmony restored by finding plans for home made cloth and making a few with little suitable fabric we had, a win on its own.

I am still a bit reluctant, plus.
Wearing glasses and the shape of my face means I'm in danger of walking into things as glasses steam up, somewhat counterproductive.

In the end we don't have them, can't get them, seems no interest from central powers in creating significant local production.
No citizen groups buying mask making machines like Hong Kong to make our own, beyond existing small local boutique MFG.

It seems to come down to countries with large enough mask production recommend or mandate citizens use them, rest of don't.
Save the good stuff for the people who may save your life or life of a dear one.

There are some ideas to turbocharge Masks. Salt any viruses enemy ?

Be careful out there....

I think people put too much emphasis on the number of tests. As it stands, if an individual is crook and goes for a test, that will happen day in, day out.

What may be missing are the additional tests carried out on people identified as being at risk due close contact etc which is possibly/probably scaled down at the weekend. Yes these do throw up additional cases but I think today's numbers stand on their own.

The additional testing will really come into it's own at rooting out the asymptomatic cases on known contacts of confirmed cases and hopefully will scale up into more of a surveillance testing regime.

I'm pretty sure there is not a direct and 100% link between tests yesterday and number of cases today.

Fair point and adds more confidence to today's numbers.

In the current climate the more tests you do it stands to reason the more infections or probable infections you will find. If you're doing fewer tests then it's highly probable that number is going to be less.

While today's number are very encouraging the true indication will be on Tuesday/Wednesday when the testing ramps up again.

My brother has an MD in internal medicine, and a Phd in Industrial medicine.

He enjoyed the article that freitasm posted here called 'Delivers the stats like no other': New Zealand's Covid-19 crush on health chief

He wrote: "Wonderful article. An article that starts and ends with reference to John Snow I like too, and effective methods hold great appeal.

The "Physicians for an American National Health Program" is a US physician organization dedicated exclusively to implementing a US single-payer national health program.

I think this piece is worthwhile:

Malcolm Gladwell: The lesson of the COVID-19 pandemic

PNHP by Munk Dialogue

Rudyard Griffiths: What do you think will be the best thing coming out of this?

Malcolm Gladwell: If I had to identify the best thing that could come out of this, it is a resurgence in the profile and importance of the public health community.

If you look back on the 20th Century, what is the great success story of the 20th Century? It is public health. It dwarfs every other thing we invented in the 20th Century.

The 20th Century is the century where a group of public health professionals stepped forward, took control of the way we live our lives, and managed to eradicate a whole raft of extraordinary diseases, fundamentally changed the health care profile of billions of people around the world, permanently made lives better for untold people in every corner of the planet.

To me that's the story. Those successes were so rich and so dramatic, that I think we began to take them for granted, and we pushed the public health world aside, and we went on to other things.

Right? We fell in love with fancy technology, and we fell in love with the Internet, and we fell in love with all kinds of other... and we silenced and marginalized all of those (public health) voices, to our enduring discredit.

And what I hope happens out of this is that we invite public health folks back to the center of the conversation.

And we say, you know what? You know who should be leading the conversation about the health of our population? The public health people. They're the ones.

They have the most important lessons to teach us. They're the ones whose priorities are in order. They're the ones who are looking for resurgent viruses coming out of some distant corner of China.

I hope we're going to invite them back to center stage, and I hope they remain there for a good long time.

Unfortunately still some idiots on the road. Brother messaged me saying motorcyclist being pursued by police, reckons motorcyclist going over 200kmph.

Looks like motorcyclist has hit a civilian car. This is in Mt Roskill, Auckland about 20 mins ago.

No, but we have had two days of lower testing now with Good Friday and now Saturday.

As stated, I think Weds will be a more normalised day.

The Washington Post - USS Theodore Roosevelt cases spike by 100 to 550

today

Another 100 crew members on board the USS Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Navy announced Saturday, bringing the total number of cases tied to the aircraft carrier to 550.

The Navy says it has moved 3,696 sailors and officers ashore, or about 92 percent of those on board. There are 3,673 negative results so far.

The warship became the focus of national attention after its commanding officer, Capt. Brett Crozier, wrote a letter to Navy leaders expressing concern about their handling of the ship’s outbreak and requesting that most of his 4,800-sailor crew disembark in Guam for testing and quarantining. ...
